Now this one you think would be easy, English ancestors? after all I am English? Well I do have a couple, but believe me they where hard to find. It just goes to show you dont really know what your ancestry is until you look. My ggg Grandfather Thomas Miller was from Kendal, He was a car driver ( never knew they had cars then ) I believe its a kind of Taxi as it is listed as " Driver of a horse-drawn passenger vehicle for hire " he married Harriet who came from Somerset. They seem to have been living a pretty ok life in Toxteth. This could be a good thread, where do your Enlish ancestors originate from? Tony |

My family are all from Liverpool going back 5 generations. Clubmoor/Anfield on my mum's side and Walton/kirkdale/Bootle on my dad's side. Going back a bit further I have found ancestors from Norfolk, Nottingham and Lancashire. (they must have been working their way up to the Pool) |

My surname apparently comes from Culcheth, which is only about 20 miles from my house.

The word 'car' comes from 'carriage'. A 'car driver' is more likely to be a driver of a tram car, rather than a taxi cab. But a 'car proprietor' would own carriages, which may or may not be for hire. |

Mam's side- Irish via Appleby, Cumbria. Dad's- Jersey. I'd have been a Jerseyman too but my mam didn't want to leave her mam to move there, so we ended up as Liverpulians instead. Guess we were just lucky.

Indeed. My sister went over to Jersey to work in the hotels when she was very young and never came back, eventually marrying a local. (but she sounds more scouse than me!) It's a beautiful place in many ways but its society is a mess, almost feudal and obsessed with corporate money. Think it's difficult for the young ones to get a home of their own here? You wouldn't believe the house prices there. The island is run by the privileged for the privileged and everyone else is just there to service them. The current outrages re children's homes and associated cover-ups says much about the place too. We had a lucky escape.

I too am born and bred in Liverpool. However, my father's family (Paterson) are of Scots descent and my mother's family (Flute) hail from Bedfordshire. They met during the war at RAF Cranfield.
