Liverpool's Scandinavian/Nordic Community

This is one subject I have been meaning to read up on. My great great grandfather Johan Petter Johansson was born in Sweden in 1843. He came to Liverpool as a young man ( his marriage was here in 1865 ). changing his name to John Peter Johnson, probably to fit in to his new country. John lived in the Toxteth area, and worked as a Flatman on the river. A Flatman was a Lancashire and Cheshire term for a Lighterman. A lighter was a large barge like craft used on rivers and sometimes towed round the coast. Now he must have done well in his job because he later opened a confectioners shop in Wolfe street. He died in 1897 and his sons took over the business. My grandfather worked as a cake confectioner as a young man, maybe it was still the family business then?

I have a record that mentions Lund in Sweden, but it does not really confirm that as his birthplace. Sadly Swedish Ancestry is as hard as Irish. Unless you have the City, Town and often the local parish, then you are hitting brick walls. still you never know
