quincyg 02-24-2008, 05:36 PM spotted these interesting street name 'signs' when out and about today

DaisyChains 02-24-2008, 05:41 PM This is a great idea for a thread!
I love the really weather beaten old ones :

marky 02-24-2008, 05:50 PM I've noticed that the newer ones are being installed everywhere, which means the old ones will soon vanish.
quincyg 02-24-2008, 06:24 PM I did a quick forum search thinking there must be a thread for street signs, but couldn't find one.
I've seen a few interesting ones over the years, when I didn't have a camera with me. Must have a wander about before they start getting replaced.
Places like Blundellsansds are great as there are loads of Victorian/Edwardian streets that have barely changed. so there must be more of those stone ones up there somewhere
another excellent thread :PDT11
Mark R 02-24-2008, 09:04 PM I remember in L8 the street signs being painted in yellows, reds and greens in conjunction with the Rastafari movement - they looked great!
Oh yes, I remember them too :) Bet there are no pics of them though.
quincyg 02-24-2008, 09:19 PM a guy called Leroy Cooper did them. there's a bit about him online, but sadly no pics of the signs.
didn't the council clean or replace them after the riots?
I deffo remember Grove St being one of them, at it's junction with Upper Parly.
quincyg 02-27-2008, 07:04 PM took these today hopping on and off buses.

quincyg 02-28-2008, 09:04 PM I had a look it's a fab site, especially the post boxes. I've been taking pics of post boxes since I got my new camera last year. always had a fascination as there was one in our street as a kid. trying to get a full set of monarchs. I've got VR ones, but I love those of the very early Victorian ones. They are stunning. Never seen one up close meself. There's one stated as being in Lpool, anyone know where? Toxteth maybe?
anyway back to signs, this is round the corner from me...it's seen better days. sadly stolen cars keep getting fired under it as it's below a railway bridge.

wallasey 02-28-2008, 09:21 PM Quincy; I think theres a VR Postbox round the corner from me...I will check it out en-route to college tomorrow!
Thanks all for the general comments about the Flickr Pool; I wasn't all that sure how much of a success it would be, but we seem to be doing quite well! Many thanks for all contributions!

cheers. it's the strange shaped one with the smaller slot. I know that sounds a bit dodgy, but it's a post box...honest!
I need to go over the water and take photos of the area my gtgt grandparents where living when they moved from Wales. so I can have a look if it's not too far from Tranmere/Rock Ferry.
Didn't see this post about Street Names!
Strange, but for some reason i took this pic thursday morning of a brand new street sign near to Gt Homer Street.

quincyg 02-29-2008, 08:24 PM I'd read that this sign was rare as it is the only street sign with Orrell on it.
Most of the 'klondyke' area is going so I though I'd best get a photo before it disappears. sorry it's a bit blurred, it was blowing a gale and I could barely stand upright.

macateb 03-09-2008, 12:46 PM This is slightly off topic, but did you know you can turn Flickr, google images etc... into a 3D viewing wall
http://www.piclens.com/site/ie/ (for internet explorer )
http://www.piclens.com/site/firefox/win/ (for firefox)
All you do is download the small file, let it install, re-start your internet software, eg firefox and then go to flickr etc.. click on the grey triangle that now appears when you highlight a photo and the whole thing turns into a 3D slideshow.
(the software only needs to be installed the first time you try it)
The software was recently shown on the BBCs 'Click' programme.

marky 03-09-2008, 09:35 PM Re: Jamaica Street Leading to Grafton Street sign: The building this is on currently has a For Sale sign on it. It's one of the better warehouses around. There was another sign which went missing a couple of months ago. I thought these were two of the largest signs left.
skgogosfan 03-10-2008, 01:38 AM There's a nice one in Bootle at the junction of the Dock Road and one of the streets leading off it which proclaims "County Borough of Bootle" thereon, somewhere by the L20 boundary. I forget exactly where, but I liked it and it must be several decades old.
Dave.

I know of a modernish one with metropolitan borough on, which I haven't had chance to do yet. I'll check along dock road way, but a lot of the Bootle end streets have been closed off and incorporated into the dock estate and built over or had the signs removed.
marky 03-10-2008, 03:36 PM I posted this one in another thread in March 2007. It went missing a few months later. I've noticed lots of signs have vanished in the last couple of years.

PhilipG 03-14-2008, 09:28 PM I believe some of my photos were magically disappearing and then appearing again the other day.
Don't know what it was all about, but hope you can see them now.
I noticed that this sign has the 21 as part of the original design, as also do some of the Bootle ones in this thread.
All the Liverpool central and south signs had the postal district number painted on in red, on plates that obviously weren't designed for the addition.

I've noticed a few that don't even have the number on as they didn't have the space and would be pre postal codes possibly.
must admit I prefer the look of the old cast iron ones to the new style ones that look like they're made out of melted down coke cans lol.
lindylou 03-15-2008, 05:51 PM Old Post Office Place.
taffy 03-15-2008, 10:52 PM This old sign looks like it was put up not by the Liverpool City Council but by the Garston Council prior to its 1902 incorporation into Liverpool. Doesn't look as if the sign's been painted since either !!

me too, I like signs that have more than just the street name on.
PhilipG 04-02-2008, 10:04 PM That Caryl Grove is the first I've seen where the Postal Number is part of the original design (apart from L20 & L21).
I like the background colour on this one.

it really caught my eye. the one on the other side of the road was cleaner, but had much less character

All taken on Thursday...on me old camera!
quincyg 04-06-2008, 12:12 AM just shows how many interesting signs there are knocking about. I've never seen any with info on like those in Garston.
this is one of my fave things to look for along with signage and carvings on buildings.

PhilipG 04-06-2008, 08:39 PM Here's another one with the postal number (8) as part of the original design.
I don't know why I've never noticed it before, because I pass it quite often.

quincyg 04-06-2008, 08:57 PM my bionic eye tells me that unlike the Old Garston Rd one, South Hill St also has a full stop after the 8.
there's one a few streets from me I noticed today on the way back from Somerfield with the number in the design . it's an old style one and the number is not as bold. I'll do a pic on my way out tomoz.
quincyg 04-07-2008, 10:00 PM unusual to get 2 old ones on same street around here
pre-postcode
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e28/quincyg/date%20stones/street%20names/Picture563.jpg
post-postcode...notice the number built into design is smaller than the Caryl Grove and Old Garston Rd ones. there's quite a few of these 21 signs about but most are in poor condition.

quincyg 04-16-2008, 12:13 AM excellent :handclap:
did Jalons Bridewell used to be Colins Bridewell?
marky 04-16-2008, 12:27 AM Yes, the Bridewell changed names. I doubt the new sign is street-legal.

marky 05-01-2008, 11:57 PM Foxdale Road. If the sign is too small, paint on the wall.

taffy 05-08-2008, 07:26 PM No quite a street name but an interesting warning sign on Brodie Avenue, Garston
julieoapw 05-08-2008, 08:57 PM In reference to the 2nd sign, I understand from other tour guides that the Penny Lane sign is often painted over by students - last 2 letters of 1st word being replaced by "is!"
Greek Street sign, bent to fit.

quincyg 05-15-2008, 09:30 PM now here's an unusual one.
at first it makes no sense. a road sign with Bootle on in Netherton with a number 10.
however Netherton was once known as Bootle 10...my hubby lived there for several years.
