How the phrase 'Mickey Mouse cup' came about for the league cup and the circumstances surrounding it.

The date is vividly set in my mind simply because it is significant.

Clue: The same fans now list it gleefully in their roll of honour.

We should but there's referees for you - again

The League Cup has been much maligned by many, Micky Mouse Cup, Fizzy Pop Cup etc.

More often than not by fans of clubs who haven't had much success in it or in some cases by fans of clubs that never actually won it at all.

Back in the 60s I'd expect, as Liverpool didnt take part from 1961/2 till 1966/7.

Interesting fact: Everton are the only one of their self perceived 'Big 5 clubs' not to have won the League Cup.

Until recently, Everton were the only big club to have shunned the competition in 1970-71

Liverpool werent a big club in the 60s then when they won 2 titles and 1 FA Cup? Admittedly, they were in the 2nd division when they first declined to take part but carried on shunning it.

The phrase was coined on 15th feb 1977 when Everton reached the final of it having scored 12 goals with only 1 conceded (to Bolton) in the semi's. Liverpool were on their way to the F.A. cup final having been knocked out of the league cup by West Brom, we'd beaten Man Utd at Old Trafford 3 nil on our way to the final.

The source is my and my old mates memory, ''we don't want that cup, that's the micky mouse cup that is, we're after the f.a. cup.'' said the kopites.

As it was, Everton and Aston Villa went to 3 games in the final before Villa won 3-2, Brian Little getting the winner , a record for the competition whilst Jimmy Greenhofs deflected goal won the F.a. Cup for Utd preventing a Liverpool treble.

From the "Talkabout Everton" feature that involved getting fans from both sides together. This was in the 16th March 1977 Everton v Liverpool programme (a game that took place between the 1st and 2nd replays):-

"Everton are keeping this city alive by going back to Wembley" was the first challenging remark from Les "we have given everybody something to talk about stirring up the old rivalry with the Reds. When were they last at Wembley for a cup final - 1974 wasnt it?"

"You've only been there in the Mickey Mouse cup" stormed the Red contingent.

John Murphy came out shouting "You're just jealous the League Cup is a big money spinner and Liverpool would be delighted if they had been to Wembley instead of us. They spend all their time telling me that Everton are rubbish, but what happend when I ask one of them to give me a price about us winning two cups, they can't put their money where their mouth is".

I have to say that as Liverpool were top of the league and just beaten St Etienne in the European Cup, whilst Everton were three points from relegation, they had a great sense of humour :PDT11

The big 5 was about money - nothing else. Two Liverpool, two north London, one Manchester. It may have a 6 th member, but that will go back to 5 when the Russian billionaire dies or sells up.

I'd also add that it should have been Everton facing Man Utd in that 1977 final as the semi final was the game of the Bryan Hamilton 'goal' that was disallowed by that attention seeking Clive Thomas who used to do the Bruce Forsyth leg when blowing his whistle for the kick off - remember it :)

You only have to look at the faces on Clemence and the defence to know it was a bona fide goal and the blabbering of Thomas afterwards who wouldn't give an answer. He also disallowed a Brazil goal during the World cup as it was entering the net. Pillock.

Ste. I think Villa might be ahead of us in total trophies won but can't be bothered googling it,. I believe Asbo has a list somewhere :unibrow:

Yes it was about money, how else could Spurs who last won the league in the 60s be involved? Newcastle are classed as big because of the crowds too but only have one team in the city. I suppose Chelsea as suddenly catapulted into the big 4 now but before Abramovich were in the wilderness apart from the odd cup here and there.
