I was down town today on dale St thinking very much the same, what if the germans had hit dale street a lot harder, what would it look like today?

Agree totally, the new buildings are too souless for a good pic even If It's composed good.

The companies building these new buildings have terrible taste In architecture.

Even mundane housing. Will the people of tomorrow be taking pictures of what is now all these new red brick estates. Not a patch on Georgian, Edwardian and Victorian Liverpool.

The Liver Building could be seen from the air for miles around so the Jerries used it as a location finder, Kev.

The same with the cathedral, although the cathedral was damaged during WW2. The art-deco tunnel vent shaft was heavily bombed too. I don't think the Germans spared anything, they just bombed what they could.

From the air the docks are easy to see, they reflect. All they needed was the cathedral as a marker to get there.

I think those new buildings are superb. Unity is distinctive. The rejected Brunswick Tower was superb. How a poverty stricken city can turn down such a billion pound proposal, and from a local company too, is beyond me. The sooner there is political change in the city the better. The money will not be there for ever. You take it while you can. This bunch are amateurs.

Interestingly there were reports of parachute land mines dropped on Liverpool and Wirral supposedly designed to explode upon rooftop contact. Actually they were shipping mines intended for the Mersey but aiming accuracy was poor to non-existent. My father worked maintaining Minesweepers at the docks after he was invalided out of the Merchant Navy. Wallasey Ferries had a contract from the Admiralty. They were kept pretty busy, the minesweepers engine mounts took quite a battering - though the sailors did manage a little bit of blackmarket trawling now and then.

The Germans did use Dublin as a guide. DeValera put extra lights in Dublin too. The German bombers would take off from France and fly up the Irish Sea. Dublin lit up to the left and turn directly east and Liverpool, the main convoy port, directly ahead. Nice people eh.

The decoys on the Dee did work to an extent. Some bombs were dropped over there. Not many but they could have blown an ammunition ship...never know.

These photos are just magnificent.. I love these old buildings.. YES, the new ones are very colorful with the lego blocks mixing up the colors, etc.., but, the architecture on the Liver Buildings are superb:snf (41): The old buildings keep the feeling of Liverpool intact.. It is what should be kept intact...It is majestic ..a feeling of pride to still have these buildings still standing ... Love the Liverbirds.. ....

As a foreigner looking in... I say to you people of Liverpool.. it is what people from abroad come to see... Keep it alive ....

Getting back to the thread. I think the older buidings are far better than the new - although some new ones are o.k.

The RAF also lit decoy fires on the sands of the Dee estuary, close to the Wirral shore, to confuse the enemy bombers. These succeeded in attracting many bombs that would otherwise have landed on Merseyside.

This is one of my favourite Liverpool buildings. Now sadly being left to rot. One of the last buildings designed by the renowed Liverpool architect, J. Francis Doyle. I particularly like the sundial clock.
