Driver may hold vital clues to Halewood shooting
Feb 7 2008

DETECTIVES investigating the murder of Derek Stevens, who was shot dead as he drove through Halewood, want to trace a taxi believed to have been in the area at the time of the shooting.

It is thought that the person who was with the black Metrocab hackney carriage at that time may hold significant information.

Mr Stevens was shot as he drove along Macket’s Lane, on January 5.

The taxi, with registration number R935 YDA, is not registered with the licensing authorities and is not believed to display a taxi licence plate.

Police have made extensive inquiries in a bid to trace the vehicle, but it has not yet been found.

Detectives have now released pictures of a Metrocab taxi, which is believed to be the identical model to that at the scene.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Dale said: “We believe this vehicle was not being used as a taxi but as a private car, predominantly in the Halewood area, in the days prior to the murder.

“This Metrocab style of taxi is less common than the standard London style hackney so I hope that people may remember if they've seen it in recent days.

“Is it parked up somewhere in your street or in garages where you live? Perhaps you've noticed it being driven round your neighbourhood? If you have seen it at any time or you know where it is now, please give us a call. Your information may be vital to this enquiry.”

If anybody has seen this vehicle at any time or knows of its current whereabouts they are asked to contact Merseyside police Major Incident Team on 0800 230 0600.

Alternatively people can give information either by email to murder@merseyside.police.uk or by texting the word CRIME followed by your message to 61051. Alternatively, you can provide information by telephoning Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Arrest in fatal shooting inquiry

The man was shot dead at the wheel of his Land Rover
A man has been arrested on suspicion of the murder of a 35-year-old man shot dead at the wheel of his car.
Derek Stevens, of Halewood, was shot in the head while driving a gold Land Rover in Mackets Lane, Halewood, Merseyside, on 5 January.

A bullet was fired through the windscreen, causing his vehicle to crash into a stationary Ford Focus.

A 24-year-old local man, arrested on Thursday, is now being questioned by officers, police said.

He is the second person to be arrested in connection with the murder.

The vehicle is not believed to have displayed a taxi licence plate

A 27-year-old man, from Halewood, was arrested six days after the shooting and released on police bail.

Earlier on Thursday, officers appealed for the driver of a black cab seen in the area at the time of the shooting to come forward.

They released a picture of a similar vehicle in an attempt to trace the motorist.

Det Ch Insp Mark Dale said: "We believe this vehicle was not being used as a taxi but as a private car, predominantly in the Halewood area, in the days prior to the murder.

"This Metrocab-style of taxi is less common than the standard London-style Hackney so I hope people may remember if they've seen it."
