Jazz star Michael Buble signs up for Summer Pops

Feb 6 2008 Jade Wright Liverpool Echo

JAZZ singer Michael Bublé was today unveiled as the first act to sign up to this year’s Summer Pops.

Pops promoter Chas Cole has pledged to bring in a raft of big names to make the 2008 Pops at the new ECHO Arena the most successful yet.

First to sign on the dotted line was multi- platinum selling, Grammy-nominate Canadian big band singer and all-round entertainer Michael Bublé.

And it seems he can’t wait to entertain the Liverpool crowd.

He said: "I just love getting in front of people. It’s so important to be in touch with your audience. They’ve paid their money. I want them to be entertained.

"If they want to cry or laugh or dance or sing or yell, they can do whatever they want. My responsibility is just to take them away."

The 32-year-old from Vancouver first wowed British audiences with a performance on the Parkinson show.

His debut album sold more than four million copies and this year he was nominated for Best International Male Solo Artist at the Brit Awards and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album at the Grammys.

He inherited his love of music from his Italian granddad, who introduced him to the singers who went on to become Bublé’s idols: Bobby Darin, Dean Martin, Sinatra, Ray Charles, and Elvis Presley.

He added: "These guys were triple threats.

"They could sing. They could dance. They could act. They were entertainers and I believe that’s a lost art now."

Promoter Chas Cole said: "This year’s Summer Pops is going to be bigger and better than ever.

"Get ready for some world class artists to be announced over the coming weeks."

Plans are also underway for a fringe Summer Pops at clubs and venues around the city.

Australian Pink Floyd back in Liverpool for Summer Pops 2008

ONE of the world’s biggest tribute acts will be back in Liverpool for this year’s Summer Pops.

Australian Pink Floyd will make it their seventh consecutive year at the Pops when they take to the stage at the new ECHO Arena for two gigs.

It means they will have played to more Pops fans - around 55,000 - than any other act in the event’s history.

They are the latest stars to sign up so far, alongside Michael Bublé, Crowded House and Deacon Blue.

On Friday July 4, they will perform Wish You Were Here and The Best Of The Wall, and on Saturday July 26, they will play Dark Side Of The Moon and Animals.

On both nights, they will also perform a special fans’ request set.

Fans can vote through the official Summer Pops Facebook group or by e-mailing aussiefloyd@cmplive.com

Australian Pink Floyd’s keyboard player Jason Sawford said: “It is no secret that we have got a very special bond with the Liverpool audience.

“So for our seventh Pops performance, and because it is a special year for the city, we wanted to do something unique.”

Tickets for both shows, priced £22.50 or £24.50, went on sale today at 9am.
