I know how you feel, it could easily have been me kicking myself because I sort of just stumbled upon it and thought 'hey, what the hell's that' I thought they'd built another building in record time when I saw the size of it from The Strand.

According to the Daily Post yesterday the QE2 is due at the CLT at 0700. HRH the Duke of Kent opens the CLT at 1130 followed by various speeches from Liverpool's great and good. There is a private reception at noon on the QE2 and a Gala concert at the Liverpool Cathedral at 1600 (invited guests only). Fireworks at 2245 and then the QE2 leaves the Mersey once more.

World cruises to start at Pier Head terminal.

LIVERPOOL’S new cruise liner terminal was given a massive boost last night as it prepared to welcome the world’s greatest liner, the QE2.

The terminal has been built only as a port of call landing stage, but the region’s leading economic agency wants it upgraded into a full terminal within two years. It will mean world cruises can once again start from the historic Liverpool waterfront.

Northwest Regional Develop-ment Agency chief executive Steve Broomhead believes allowing liners to start and end cruises on the Mersey waterfront will enable the city’s tourism industry to take a giant leap forward.

Informal talks have already started about vital arrangements that will need to be in place before full cruise facilities are bestowed on the city.

Baggage handling, passport control and security checks will all be needed to switch from a simple port of call facility.

Cruises currently start on Merseyside, but they depart from Langton Dock where baggage and customs facilities are already available.

But that terminal, owned and run by the Mersey Docks and Harbour Company, is within a working docks system sur-rounded by heavy freight ter- minals, rather than the prest- igious Liverpool city centre arrival and departure which the cruise firms would prefer.

One possibility is to use the baggage handling and pass-port check controls at Liver-pool John Lennon Airport.

Cruise passengers would then be driven to the new £19m terminal alongside Princes Parade.

The yet to be built Mersey Ferry Terminal at the Pier Head could also accommodate smaller cruise handling, and there is scope for one of the large hotels to be used as a baggage handling centre.

Last night, Riverside MP Louise Ellman promised to ensure the Government backs the upgrade plan.

“The cruise liner terminal is already going to make a vast difference to Liverpool and Merseyside, but adding the city’s waterfront as a departure point will really up the ante. I will do all I can to make this happen.”

Mr Broomhead said: “The new terminal will be a lasting legacy for Liverpool’s Capital of Culture. There are already 23 ships booked in for visits. They will bring in thousands of visitors to our region.

“I want to see the terminal used as a full-blown cruise terminal and I believe that will happen in around two years’ time. I cannot see any obstacles to upgrading the facility. The cruise holiday sector is growing at a fast pace and Liverpool will be an attractive departure point.

“We have put in £10m – more than half of the cost – because we can see the enor-mous benefits of the cruise industry for Liverpool.”

Martin King, director of tourism at The Mersey Partnership (TMP) said: “The economic benefits of a full-blown cruise liner terminal could be immense.”

The QE2 will be arriving around 7am this morning and will remain tied to the new terminal until she sets sail at 3am tomorrow.

The Duke of Kent will be officially opening the new terminal at 11.30am today, and there will be a spectacular firework display at 10-45pm.

Cruise ship brings tourists to heart of Liverpool
May 21 2008
by Staff Reporter, Liverpool Daily Post

http://images.icnetwork.co.uk/upl/article/20031701/2008/05/21/12159473.jpeg

THE first cruise liner of the season was welcomed to the new £17m landing stage at Liverpool docks yesterday.

Former dock workers lined the Pier Head to welcome the German ship Astor as it cruised into the Mersey carrying 600 passengers.

She spent the day docked in Liverpool as passengers shopped in the city and took trips to Chester, and round Liverpool’s Beatles story museum.

Astor, which left the city last night, was the first of 16 vessels already booked for the summer season. Passenger spending in the city is expected to boost the economy by some £3m.

Keith Blundell, head of tourism at Liverpool Culture Company said: “It’s very exciting because it’s our first full year of operation.

“The ship is obviously the attraction, but more and more cruise companies are using destinations and ports of call as selling points and that is what is attracting people to them.”

The ship season will culminate with a visit from the QEII and the Balmoral as well as the Grand Princess, a 2,600 passenger American liner, bumping the total estimate of passengers visiting the city to more than 23,500.

A council spokesman said: “At this rate the terminal could pay for itself within the next seven years.”

Grand Princess docks at Liverpool Cruise Terminal
Jun 11 2008

THE largest passenger ship ever to visit Liverpool sailed up to the city’s cruise liner terminal at the Pier Head this morning.

The Grand Princess carries 2,600 passengers, is 950ft long and weighs in at 109,000 tons.

The superliner docked at 6am this morning and will sail out at 7pm tonight.

The visit is part of a 12 day long tour by the liner around the British Isles.

The massive vessel boasts a whole deck of mini-suites, 700 balcony staterooms, casino, cigar lounge, afternoon tea served daily and onboard theatre.

Facilities aboard include a spa, 10 restaurants and eateries, swimming pools, kids clubs, sports simulators, internet cafe and an outdoor cinema.

Grand Princess is the first ever Princess ship to visit Liverpool and will return to the city three more times this summer on 5 and 29 July and 22 August.

Log on for a full gallery of pictures of the Grand Princess later today.

I'm quite fortunate in that I work in one of the buildings on Princes Dock (and no, it's not the one that you can't take pictures of!) so I get to take photos from the 4th floor of the ships/boats at the landing stage.

Kev - just a thought but why not have separate threads for all the different ships/boats berthing at the landing stage? There's quite a few due in this year.

No it was one of my rare days without him as he went to school for the first

This brings to an end 11 years of grandchildren minding as we had 2 more before him. They have started school knowing all about all the wildlife and nature in the country and the sea, they are able to name all the fishes in the sea,and how tides work and at 2 years they could name all the stations from Kirkby to Liverpool and Southport.
We have 24 grandchildren but only started to mind the last 3 when I retired

Spot on :handclap: She really is a cracking ship. I think i will go over the water when she comes back.

I heard the Qe2 is coming on 3rd October, anyone know if this is true, it will be the last chance to see her as its her farewell tour.

Great pics Philip. They get appreciated on here.

I believe you met my brother and nephew down at the terminal. You'll know who I mean if I say the latter is an 'old man' for his tender years. :unibrow:

And as you were saying bye to her as she disappeared around that corner, Quincyg was saying hello on Crosby beach.

The little fella i'm on about is disabled on his feet, cheeky too :) They certainly knew you as PhilipG so I bet he asked you your name? It was early 6-7am.

heres a couple of supersized photos, or of Ark Royal while moored (taken from Seacombe) and a second of the Grand Princess a it passed by Egremonnt Ferry on the way out of Liverpool. Hope these are in the correct section.

You can see the joins if you look, but the Grand Princess one was VERY difficult to stitch due to it moving, and affecting the light. But it looks OK...:D

The photos here are just smaller 'thumbnails', for the full sizes click the links..

No it was one of my rare days without him as he went to school for the first
time on an introduction half day. He starts school after the summer holidays.
We have 24 grandchildren but only started to mind the last 3 when I retired
from work. So now I can really retire.

a few more than us then...we have 18...but 6 gtgt grandkids. you've given them a great start and I bet they know more than a lot of the kids they'll be mixing with. so well done :handclap:

Anyone know where Captain Johnnie Walker has gone to I took this on sunday
but on wednesday he had disappeared, maybe he`s walked into the river
I photographed him on Monday. they keep shifting things about. I'm still waiting to hear back from the council on what they've done with the Great Escape horse statue from Church St

yes I've got October 3rd in my diary. that was the date listed on the cunard site at the beginning of the year.

And as you were saying bye to her as she disappeared around that corner, Quincyg was saying hello on Crosby beach.

and bloody cold it was too lol. well worth seeing her sailing out, but I spent the following day stuck in the house ill.

Just for general information the MS Prinsendam at 674 foot long is due in Liverpool on the 11th July and the Crystal Symphony at 781 feet long is due in on the 20th July. At a quite impressive 720 feet the MS Maasdam is here on the 26th July. Not forgetting that the Grand Princess is visiting on the 5th and 29th July AND also on the 22nd of August.

Of course not to be missed is the final voyage of the QEII who comes to our fair city on the 3rd of October.

Hi Taffy they were taken with my old camera the Panasonic Lumix LZ2, I haven`t got a standard lens for my new Canon Slr yet, only a tele 75-300 lens,so it`s a bit big to lug around till I build my neck muscles up.

Going by the Princess Cruises (http://www.princess.com/learn/destinations/europe/cruises/ebn.jsp) website the Grand Princess arrives at about 0700hrs and leaves about 12 hours later. So no night pictures I am afraid, PG.
