great pic, how do those defences work, are they against tanks, landing craft , infantry or what, they look like they would give good cover to gunfire

Thanks for the comments. I've always assumed the sea defences at Leasowe were designed to break up waves but I suppose they could have had other uses like stopping tanks landing. Never thought of that one.

Once upon a time, (long long ago,) you could walk from New Brighton Baths to West Kirby and not see any concrete for the whole walk.
The present defences are there as a defence agains the sea and land erosion.
They are doing a great job but alas, spoilt a nice sand-dune coast line.
During the summer? we spend a lot of time on Leasowe Common.

Spent a lot of our weekends at Morton Common when I was a kid. We had
a family tent which we left in a shed in someones back garden to save us carrying it backwards and forwards to Kirkdale, the cost was sixpence a week.
Every sunday would see us carrying bags of cockles on the ferry going home.
The sea defences weren`t put there till after the war years
chippie
02-02-2008, 05:02 PM
Yes I remember Morton was the costa brava to us kids back in the 50/60s not that I ever went very often but when someone did take me ,the tents were all over the sands and it looked like another country to me. Now it would probably look like a refugee camp.

I wondered always why the Brits love these bright colours. Strong red, yellow and so on. For instance also at the window frames or doors of the houses. The phone boxes too. And now at this fence. In Germany nobody uses such colours.
But there is always a cloudy sky in Britain. And maybe the people seek for such colours to do something against the grey of the sky. That's it, isn't it?

The Red, Gold and Green Colours are symbolic of the Rastafarian faith. In this case yellow seems to have been substituted for gold.

Saint Chad's Sad Stone's
(Inspired by Greg's Dad's beautiful picture)
There they stood twisted and gnarled
Their faces weathered and beaten
Algae growing on bare sand stone
The carefully carved writing eaten
Devoured by generations of pollution
The acid in the rain eating stone
Did the man who chipped that stone
Ever think that rain would destroy it
Family of the dead long dead themselves
No one left to come and mourn
Cut the grass and clean the stone
Complain to council about litter
Look at what Spring has sprung
The carpet of purples and whites
Reaching for the rays energies
Life goes on, Life still goes on

That's so very British. I like it, but the houses are so very small. Maybe 3 metres wide, not more, and 2 stories. Do there live families with 2 children for instance?

which street is this malwood, elswick ? I used to work on many of those houses in those streets, and along grafton street which runs across the bottom, bread was filmed in these streets, I actually worked for the creator of bread and the liver birds ( carla Lane ) on her house in London, love this pic, brings back memories of walking up to mill street to get chips or bacon butties for our dinner
Atany, these houses are very old, known as 2 up, 2 down, as in the number of rooms. When built in fact, families were much larger so it would be more common for 6 or more people to be housed in them. Elswick Street was the 'Bread' Street (sitcom), my father-in-law was born in Grafton st then moved to one of these streets, Netherby but has been in the Flower Streets, Kirkdale now for 40 odd years.
Atany, not many miles South of here, some of the houses are as big or bigger then 3 or 4 of these put together.

one thing i remember about all the houses in these streets i worked on was that when replacing the front door frames the brickwork was a good 1 and a half inches out of plumb heading towards the mersey and the frames just looked wrong if you put them in plumb so you would have to purposley put them in wonky......... oh yeah and while your having a cup of tea and its quiet you can hear the trains rattling like hell directly underneath you.

Thanx for the explanation!
In my town there live the people also alone in a flats now, which were once built for a big family. But these houses are really very small. I hope there don't need to live families with many kids. But apart from that, these houses are very nice, very British. Also the street lamp. Maybe a tree wouldn't be bad. Are there gardens at the rear?

No Atany, there are no gardens at the rear but small yards.
I grew up in a house no bigger than that and my grandparents had eight children in them and me also in the end.
It wasn,t even cosy as the cold got in through the door gaps and window gaps. No central heating and no hot water in those days. :PDT_Aliboronz_11:

Those little palaces of the working class who built Liverpool have a yard so tiny the outside toilet could be reached by a big step on a cold winters night if the need arose and you didn't want to poison the others crammed into each tiny bedroom.
I was born into a house this size and lived there with my Grandmother, Mum and Dad, one older brother and four older sisters. All in two tiny bedrooms.
My cot was the bottom drawer of the dressing table as there wasn't floor space to sit a cot down.
My good wife often remarks "I wish they had shut that drawer when you were in it" at times when I'm getting on her nerves.

St Peter's became the Pro cathedral for Liverpool and demolished around 1920when the new Liverpool cathedral was in a usable state.
It's the Merseyside School of Evangelism in the outer circle, then "God Loves You" inside this.
Not sure if there is a Merseyside god, perhaps each of the three football teams. Then there's Max's references to the "god-like" zoom on his camera !!

Rigby's also has (or had) the date 1726 on it. The Central Hotel in Ranelagh Street 'carries' the date 1698 (or 1675, or 16 something), but neither they nor the Leather Lane pub are as old as the dates that are on them.

Phil, you'll have to take up the argument about which is the oldest pub with " Mine Host" at The Hole in the Wall !! They certainly advertise they are the oldest pub in Liverpool. Whether true or not I don't know either. However Ranelagh street did not exist in 1726 let alone 1698, so that date is definitely suspect.

Ranelagh Street certainly existed in the early 1700s and probably earlier, as it was the road to Manchester.

Ranelagh Street certainly existed in the early 1700s and probably earlier, as it was the road to Manchester.

Agreed the route was there but there were no buildings on it and at that time it had no name

why is the anchor in the carpark? shouldn't it be a bit closer to the sea or maybe on a ship or equivilant site.

Nice pic Taffy, those houses along North Mossley Hill Rd are huge, is this one of them?

It`s only yards from a ship repairing yard which used to be Cammel Lairds
the way they are positioned I think they might have been put there as a monument but have been overgrown with weeds

Thanks for the comment about the photo. The house featured on a Sherlock Holmes TV series a few years ago. Yes it's on Elmsley Rd which comes off North Mossley Hill Rd. This part of Liverpool is truly delightful.

I caught a glimpse of this chap and knew he was watching me, and I had the feeling that he thought I hadn't seen him, so I pretended to take a photo of something in the direction he was looking, and then turned round quickly and snapped him without composing the picture, whick luckily turned out rather well.
He dived inside as soon as he saw me facing him, but too late!
I think its called Eden Square - its between Hatton Garden and Cheapside.

we get them regularly. started about 5 years ago with 1. then that one brought another, then the baby ones started coming. I've got a storage box improvised into a feeding station. they have water and a pile of cat biscuits every night. Most we had at any one time was 8!
we had to move the food to the bottom of the garden from half way up. they are such noisy eaters they were waking us up in the night lol!
we had to rescue a baby that I found wandering round the garden one morning. it had hypothermia. they are lovely little things.

do a mini cruise, they leave Woodside and don`t turn for home till just past

Hedgehog fleas will jump onto humans, dogs and cats but don't tend to hang around long. They rarely bite humans but it is not unheard of. They are also found on other small mammals such as brown rats. Hedgehogs don't need the fleas and will not die without them. You should however not use dog/cat flea powder to get rid of the fleas - that will kill the hedgehog (I think this is were the misunderstanding comes from). You can use powders that are suitable for birds.

Dear guys
I know, it's really not my task to moan here about your pictures. I'm only a foreigner and a guest. But I think the pictures of this forum have too many byte. 800 kb for instance for one picture. And if there are 5 pictures on one page, then we have 4000 kb. I'm sure my computer sheds hidden tears.
And I wonder if nobody of you has a little fear, someone could snitch your pictures for commercial use? If you would publish only small pictures in a low quality then won't be such a danger.

yes, it takes all your time because the pictures are so very big.
At first you have to download Gimp, for instance, or Paint shop, Photo shop, whatever....
http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html Gimp is free
Then you have to open the file (File -> Open) Okay?
Then click at Picture -> Scaling or Resize (not canvas-size!)
Then make it smaller - type in a smaller length and height
Then save your picture with another name in your folder, but with a .jpg extension
Then it will ask you for the quality, with Gimp 100 means very good quality but more kb. In Paint Shop is 1 the best quality and many kb. Try it a few times and observe how it looks!
Then upload that smaller picture and we all will be very happy.
Attention! Give your picture always a new name if you save it after any changing, or your genuine picture will be lost. It's the same as in Word and so on. The program will remind you moreover.

First let me thank you for the lesson but you make it sound harder than what I am doing now, which is only 2 moves from flickr or photobucket. If our admin
team didn`t like how I was posting my pics I`m sure they would have told me by now.
By the way there is quite a lot posted in a large size by other members.
I myself don`t like thumbnails because they have to be enlarged for viewing
I would rather see large ones anytime, after all they are all resized to 800.

I think the problem is in the how many bytes the photos are. the better quality the picture the bigger the file. although the size of photo is pretty much the same on the page the sizes of the files are different. I checked mine against other photos posted and found mine were smaller files.
right click on a photo and then properties and you'll see the difference in file sizes.
My camera is 7.2 mega pixels. perhaps others have better quality cameras with more pixels.
Just a thought.

Maybe the admins are having high-end computers, which never have problems to display pictures.
And if you never do any image editing with your computer, then is that as you would have a Mercedes, but you're driving each day only one circuit around your house and then you're parking that car again.
There are so many things you can do with your pictures with Gimp. You can enlarge details. Changing the colours, brightness,.... Correcting mistakes. You can make photomontages. Whatever. Never done that?
You could create greetings cards for Christmas. Maybe also a calendar as a gift. Or booklets and covers for your burnt CDs. If you haven't a printer, the copy shops will print that too.
And with Animation Shop you can make animations. For instance that a ship navigates along the Mersey.
Or such rubbisch:

Hi Antany,I do have a few programs which I sometimes use to do the things you can do with your Gimp, for example Picasa,Photofiltre,Photoimpression,
but I try to take my photos as I would like them look without alterations.
If I wanted to alter them that much I think I would have taken up painting
instead years ago.

I didn't realise this discussion was taking place.
I don't particularly like thumbnails, certainly not in the POTD thread, but if it suits some people, then I can live with it.
I also didn't realise that Greg's Dad's photos 'weights' so much.
(I'm so green that I don't even know if 'weights' is a computer expression!)
My photos are about 2 Mb on my memory card, but when I save them to flickr I choose the 800 width size, and they end up about 100 Kb or less.
(That must be why they look as if they've been shot through lino!)
GD's photos are consistently beautiful, and I don't care what he's doing.
Yes, he's an amateur, and also an inspiration to the rest of us. :PDT11
