With all the barricades and fencing gone we are once more free to roam the
steps of st georges hall again. Notice the fencing in front of the car park
does this mean it`s being demolished I hope
John(Zappa) 01-28-2008, 09:08 PM Nice one Gregsdad.Hope you don't mind me copying it for some friends who live outside Liverpool.
Cheers buddy:PDT_Piratz_26:
PhilipG 01-28-2008, 10:27 PM Great viewpoint, but where were you?
wallasey 01-28-2008, 10:57 PM I think he's standing outside St Georges Hall, on the cobbles above the entrance to the subway.
It has changed so much over the last 50 or so years; I miss the flower bed! It would look rather monochrome if it weren't for the Concourse Tower being covered in purple to be honest!
To be honest, Lime Street and Great Charlotte Street has lost alot of its old charm since everything was cleared. I wasn't born back then, but the images I have seen pre-dating the mass clearance of this part of the city showed what great buildings other than the St Georges Hall we had/have.
Another Great shot thought mate, it will be interesting to look back on in a few years time and compare the difference!
chippie 01-29-2008, 12:03 AM It looks as if the tower is suspended on two poles, pretty good shot of it too Russ
Norm NZ 01-29-2008, 12:44 AM "Nice Pic"! Gregs dad. I recognised the 'Forum' Cinema, and the Cathedral of course, But nothing else!!! How places have changed!:Smiliz_Kingz_PDT_13
shoney 01-29-2008, 11:10 AM pavements look wider than i remember them
PhilipG 01-29-2008, 11:22 AM Gregs dad.
Were you inside the former North Western Hotel?
You were obviously a lot higher than street level.
A good vantage point is the car park roof itself, but make sure they haven't started demolishing it first :)
This 60s row will soon be consigned to history.

Hi Philip,as you know they have taken all the fences down now so we are able to climb the steps again. It was taken by the large side entrance
door top of the stairs over the Merseyrail entrance

Thanks GD.
I thought you'd got into a building.
I'll go to that car park, while it's still open.
Philip, take the lift or stairs around the corner from the book clearance centre and the top floor is an open air car park, you'll need to stand on the very sharp perimeter steel buffers but you can rest your camera or your elbows on the wide surrounding wall, don't worry you can't fall off, unless you want an extra higher shot and you stand on the wall itself.

The old North Western Hotel on Lime St converted to halls of residence for
students with a bar called The Head Of Steam in the left hand corner.
View from the steps of St George`s Hall

They were seriously thinking of demolishing the old hotel at one time, and because of that an urban myth grew that St George's Hall was threatened with demolition, which it never was, but it was mothballed when the courts closed.

Waterways 02-02-2008, 05:39 PM They were seriously thinking of demolishing the old hotel at one time,
Yes, I saw drawings of a really modern looking buildings with long straight window lines on the site of the North Western Hotel, circa 1947. Thank God that never happened.
The hotel was a failure and was railway offices after and much of the time unused or partially used, so developers were always keen to get their hands on it and demolish. I don't think it would make a great hotel today as it is too far from the docks/river, where most hotels want to be, and should be.

I'm not sure but I think the blue hoardings are for the new screen that's going to hide the car park.:)
