Elijah Sandham and Robert Rankin
Who? Never heard of them?
Never heard of the ditty that every child in Kirkdale used to sing
back in 1930/31? During the lead-in to the 1931 General Election?
Vote, vote for Mr(Dr?) Sandham
Who's that knocking at the door?
If it's Sandham, let him in
If it's Rankin, dig his chin
And he won't come knocking any more!
If your Dad was a Conservative , no problem, you just switched the names.
For anybody seriously interested, it was Rankin who got in. Sandham,
who had been successful in the 1929 Election, was swept away with almost
all the other Liverpool Labour candidates with the formation of the National
Government, still in power when the War broke out.
