View Full Version : Goodison's atmosphere.
Undoubtedly, just like anywhere else, not as good as when the old terracing was there and it'll be hard to ever replicate that night against Bayern or that game against QPR when we won the league with kids in trees in Stanley Park and all over the clock by the church but it's nice to hear one of the top 3 bosses say it

The atmosphere at Goodison is generally poor. It always has been. That is why the club needs to get to a stadium that is designed to promote atmosphere - the one tier cantilevered roof sweeping bowl design.
It is OK on big game, however the average league game is dire. It is because the fans are split into separate acoustic pens of upper and lower and in separate stand too. The crowd never acts as one.
Bayern was special - a one off. I heard the old Goodison Rd terrace chant only twice - vs Leeds when the teams were all taken off and Notts Forest. What a noise!!!!! - there again one offs. GP at times was deathly quiet, to the point thee was game after game with no chanting at all, just polite applause here and there.
I look forward to leaving the old lady - she has served her purpose and now time to move on...but will skintflint Kenright spend to have an a stadium that generates atmosphere? I doubt it. The Kirkby one doesn't even have the corners seated - essential in creating atmosphere. I see the corner filled with ad-hoc zip up exec boxes that will kill atmosphere and make the stadium look naff.
I don't know when you last went but there was a cresendo of noise (from both sets of fans) during the Man City game. It was played at such a pace that the minute a player had it the opposing fans were giving it the 'man on' or 'take him on' routing en masse as so much was at stake and we did win that poll as detailed on the site (undertaken by neutrals - though with too much time on their hands for me)

You are missing the point, the ground is not conducive to atmosphere generation and never was. Anfield had that by the bucket load. On a big game it will be "noisy", as in any ground. Goodison Park was bad at atmosphere generation, the crowd "roared" and famous for the Goodison roar.
shoney 01-16-2008, 03:42 AM the reason goodison's roar is louder than anfields is due to the amount of limp wristed soft southern shandy drinkers that follow the reds
And there was me thinking it was the Norwegian twang that was what took the volume out of it? :unibrow:

You`ve started it now Shoney  :)

He said:
Arsene Wenger has praised the atmosphere of Goodison Park.
The Arsenal boss revealed he finds the home of the Blues to be more intimidating than Liverpool’s Anfield ground.
“Liverpool is the same kind of support but Everton is a bit more aggressive because Everton is up at the moment,” said Wenger.
Maybe because
Liverpool 1 Arsenal 1
Everton 1 Arsenal 4
He likes that kind of intimidation, I'd like it too if my team won 4-1.
He also said (after being criticised for 3 goals that were up and unders (one a hand ball) when it was Everton playing the Arsenal way) 'We had to play it like that as Everton were keeping the ball from us'
You have the top 3 to come yet - all away from home.
On the basis you haven't beaten any of the top 3 at home, that is a tall order.
Noise, crowd intimidation, chanting, singing and atmosphere does not put goals in the net anyway and it was the former he was on about, it's the team that has to do the latter and if anything, it's proof that we don't only just sing when we're winning.

If up and unders won games Bolton would have topped the league the last 10 years, funny how it is up and unders to blame and not poor defending?
Defending was to blame, especially the Yobo/Howard mix up but the hand ball one should have been spotted by the 4 officials not the defenders - Eduardo was later booked for knocking another one into his path in the area with his hand to 'cheat' another goal having got away with it earlier. Had that been a defender knocking it out of the way of Eduardo with his hand it would have been a penalty and sending off of course

Great post. I agree completely with you.
There's a bit of campaign going on to get the End Stands changed so that we can finally have a stadium capable of atmosphere. It is to get a large single tier behind both goals, the executive boxes can be doubled up on the sides. There's no reason why it will cost more, and it will actually increase the number of boxes There's no reason why it can't be done. We just need as many fans as possible to email the club and let them know, we all want it
