Kof - Urban Culture news
Congratulations Liverpool !!! That was an amazing Opening Ceremony last night. I went along on my own as friends weren't that bothered. It was really powerful and gives me hope that the rest of the year is going to be as good. I was disappointed in Ringo's Liverpool 8 song, but then what can you expect from a 60 plus year old who hasn't lived in the city for such a long time. I would compare it with a song which was released by Liverpool's best Urban artist earlier in 2007. KOF, (Kofi Owusu) his song `Liverpool Anthem' has been receiving rapturous applause whenever it is performed. This is a song about our city from a young man who takes his music from the city and yet gives something back. I was lucky enough to get home and watch the news reports on TV and there was Kof being interviewed on BBC Newsnight with Phil Redmond and Margie Clarke.
He put over the point of many of the youth of this city, that it is hard for them to get involved in Capital of Culture when they are not active in the mainstream arts and music. Although Kof sounded a little negative, he was actually trying to get the message across that many of the urban youth do want to get involved, they just feel that there is a barrier and they don't know how to climb over it. Through his music Kof has been actively seeking to share the message that Capital of Culture is for them as well.
Kof is not just a rapper, he is a music producer, R & B singer and receives lots of air time on Merseyside and national Radio, BBC and 1XTRA, and in partnership with his cousin Yaw, runs an Urban Music, Media and Youth Culture Company called Urbeatz.com
URBEATZ undertake a wide range of activities ranging from Artist Management to Event Management to Broadcast. Further URBEATZ offer a number of services including studio time, music production, alternative education (hip-hop workshops and educational seminars and conferences), consultancy and film/video production. Although these activities are varied they are all aimed at producing, promoting, developing and managing Urban Music and Culture, whilst at the same time providing quality and integrity.
In 2007 URBEATZ were awarded two national awards for the quality of their work: ICE Creative Business of The Year 2007-2008 and GPA Entrepreneur Award Winners 2007.
This young man should have been the artist standing on top of St Georges Hall belting out the Liverpool Anthem, see the youth joing in then. Culture is for all. I am aged 56 by the way and the Beatles used to be one of my favourite bands however, I have moved with the times. I want to see this young man, a child of our city who lives in our city performing in the Echo Arena when we have the MTV Awards in August.
What does anyone else think - Do we want to see Kof at the MTV Awards and will Capital of Culture benefit from all those dollars Ringo will be making of the back his Liverpool 08 song.
