Yet another poor display from Liverpool today at Kenilworth Rd. The differencce today tho was that we weren't even the better side and Luton deserved to win the game.

Well seen Stevie was not playing. Liverpool lacked Luster

Luton bossed the mid field. :( Huge disapointment.

A serious charge here. To what extent was this "fixed" so that Liverpool helps a club in administration, and to fill the Anfield coffers as well as Luton's? This isn't the first time this sort of thought has crossed my mind when a top team gets a poor result, so it is not just Liverpool. Thoughts anyone?

Actually what I just said may be a bit strong. I have just watched the highlights of the match again and while overall the Liverpool performance was poor I do see effort up front from Babel, Crouch, and Benayoun particularly, enough effort that the tie could have been won. On the other hand, I thought it was a mistake to take off Babel who was one of our better players, and there often appears to be a comedy of errors in defense whether it is Reina in goal or another guy.

Riise was unfortunate to concede the own goal -- he had kicked the ball to clear it and I think the ball would have gone wide if it had not hit his hand. However, will that mistake be remembered the way we recall Jimmy Traore's own goal at Burnley that put us out of the Cup in Benitez's first season with the club?

I don't think it was fixed to help Luton, otherwise lfc could have just donated their portion of the gate receipts to Luton like they'd requested but it was turned down.

Okay that's a good point and something I had not known about. Thanks, Ged.

Luton had only one shot on target didn't they?

I watched on Sopcast (internet) and couldn't believe the rubbish I was hearing, Gerry Armstrong said Rafa "was disrespecting the FA Cup" by fielding a weakened team, and one of the punters on that channel ( I think it was Sports 1 ) was saying Liverpool should play 4 strikers in a 4-2-4 formation!

Give me SS1 and Andy Grey, he might dislike Liverpool, but at least (most of) his comments are sensible!

Hi Folks

Is Gerrard injured? I haven't heard him mentioned in connection with the Luton match yesterday but a Soccernet story, "Defensive Benitez denies concern over sack" (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=496195&cc=5901) reports in part the following:

"A 1-1 draw was no more than administration-hit Luton deserved against a disjointed Liverpool side that showed eight changes from their last outing, with Fernando Torres and Jose Reina both rested.

"Asked about his team selection, Benitez said: 'What is my strongest team? Do you think our goalkeeper was troubled too much today?

"'When you play Crouch, who is the centre forward for England, (Yossi) Benayoun, who is an international player, (Dirk) Kuyt, who is an international player and (Andriy) Voronin, you give the other team the message that you have a very strong side. The other players were injured." (emphasis mine)

According to Saturday's Echo Gerrard was injured so therefore didnt trial - either that or his wife didnt want him gone too long in case the burglars struck again.

I dont think there's any chance this game was fixed, I think its more likely the players just werent up for it - Kenilworth is a horrible little ground with no facilities and I just dont think they were inspired by the surroundings.

Its disappointing if what Ged has said is true about Liverpool refusing to forfeit their share of the gate receipts. Tickets were £21, meaning the £100,000 or so Liverpool insisted in keeping is just one weeks wages for Gerrard, but a massive amount to Luton.

i have been a Liverpool fan all my life and I thought they could have given Luton the proceeds of the gate. When you have multi millionaire footballers swannin round in priceless clothes and cars with vaccuous wives and little teams like Luton who have forfeit their wages for weeks and LFC won't even help them out it thoroughly disgusts me and is an example of how our society is going wrong! Shame on LFC it would have been a very nice gesture to waive the gate money just once.

Indeed 100% agreement from me.

The problem is you see that its all about the WAGs now and not about the beautiful game or skill of the ball. If they can't afford to spend £4000 on an outfit then its not football.

If you have been a Liverpool fan all your life, you will know about them doing small clubs favors, like when we helped Wrexham with 2 friendlies and gave them all the proceeds, and when we wrote off a loan on a player another team had bought because they where in financial difficulty.

I think this has been blown out of all proportion, if we didn't give them the cash for the gate, I'm sure there is some reason for us not doing so, and I'd just like to point out that Luton didn't wait a heartbeat before telling the papers did they?

I read somewhere that because the Luton is in administration, then Luton FC would not have received the cash anyway (the bank would have got it) but I can't find the article again on the web.

I found out a bit more of a possible reason why we didn't give them our half of the gate.

"When they are put into liquidation on Monday night all the money and assets that the club has will go to their creditors. Since the likes of the taxman are likely to be owed far more than some YTS lad on £75 a week, they will have far bigger claim to what little money Luton have than their YTS players."

As I said in my previous Post, Liverpool FC have helped poorer clubs out on quite a few occasions, and this could be the reason we didn't donate?

Even though i'm a blue, I have to agree with Liverpool not forfeiting any cash to a rival who is trying to dispose of them out of the cup.

Furthermore, you lfc fans may remember attending a match not that long ago that was called off because Luton fc failed to turn up (because of snow) . Dalglish said they should recompense the lfc fans who travelled (from Cornwall and Norway) sorry, no, i'm only kidding about that bit as i'm feeling mischievious :unibrow:)

Luton didn't even reply - so maybe what goes around comes around.

But you get my drift. If they forfeit 100k., how on earth will they pay Carra that week?

Personally I don't see why Liverpool should be expected to fork out money to help out Luton.

I don't see any other clubs handing them big wads of cash.

If Liverpool want to make that kind of donation I can think of lots of local clubs that could use that kind of money.

Thanks, Ged.

LIVERPOOL star Jamie Carragher was showered with booze moments before he angrily confronted a group of foul-mouthed Luton fans.

The defender reacted to abuse hurled at him after the Reds’ FA Cup clash against Luton on Sunday.

The 29-year-old jumped up onto a advertising hoarding at Kenilworth Road to remonstrate with the offending supporters.

Today it emerged the Liverpool players were targeted by a colourful gang of Hatters’ supporters after the final whistle.

Club sources described how Jamie and other Liverpool players received a volley of foul-mouthed abuse as they signed autographs for children.

Story continues. . . (http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/0100news/tm_headline=jamie-carragher-s-fury-at-luton-fans-8217-abuse%26method=full%26objectid=20324686%26siteid=5 0061-name_page.html)

Another unfortunate incident demonstrating bad behaviour by irresponsible "fans" in this case Luton supporters. . . :(

I remember that, it was about -5 that night and snow everywhere but we were assured the game was on, till Luton made no plans to set off earlier and got snowed in, then couldnt get to the airport in time to make a flight. Their fans made it and so did many southern based Reds. When the game was eventually played it finished 0-0 and Luton refused a 2nd replay on a neutral ground so they won the toss and it went back to their place where they won 3-0. Dalglish dedicates almost a page to the episode in his autobiography, as their away fans ban and plastic pitch pissed him off as well. What have Dalglish and a Jumbo jet got in common? A jumbo stops whining over Luton.
