I did a playlist on my ipod, Manchester versus Liverpool, my favourite tracks, ten songs each, no artist appearing more than once. It was very close as to who 'won'. The list of influential and innovative artists/bands from Manchester arguably outweighs that of Liverpool, if you leave The Beatles out. Having said that, you can't leave The Beatles out of the equation, they are our 'ace in the pack'. Manchester can put forward The Smiths, Joy Div, The fall, The Buzzcocks, Oasis, Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, whoever they want. But when we can just say, 'yeah, but we've got The Beatles', there's no answer to that.
So my playlist went like this;
Manchester
Ever Fallen In Love - Buzzcocks
Regret - New Order
Reel Around The Fountain - The Smiths
Totally Wired - The Fall
Loose Fit - Happy Mondays
Sally Cinnamon - Stone Roses
Don't Look Back In Anger - Oasis
Voodoo Ray - A Guy Called Gerald
Shot By Both Sides - Magazine
Pacific State - 808 State
Liverpool
A Day In The Life - The Beatles
There She Goes - The La's
A Promise - Echo & The Bunnymen
Heart As Big As Liverpool - The Mighty Wah!
Comedy - Shack
Here She Comes Again - The Stands
Valerie - The Zutons
Dreaming Of You - The Coral
Deep House Victims Minibus Appeal - HMHB
Wonderful Life - Black
can anyone suggest alternative tracks ?

Both cities have great music scenes, there's no winner as music is about personal taste.
There's always so much more to offer from both places, bands like Gomez,Anathema,The Rascals,The Last Shadow Puppets,Candie Payne,Kathryn Williams and even Marc Almond are from Merseyside and I'm sure there are many many more manc bands too. That's without even touching on members of The Beatles solo careers, remember Paul McCartney is the most successful musician of all time and Lennon and McCartney are the most successful duo.

I saw Peter Hooton of The Farm giving his tuppence worth. I think both cities have great music and absolutely hate this versus competition.

So do I because we've both got the best music scenes in the Country by a country mile.Let's not forget Cream,The Cavern,The Quadrant Park and Erics for Liverpool and Manchesters Hacienda that made their mark on this Country too and we've even got "Scouse House. It's not all about bands either Russell Watson is great in what he does and Simon Rattle is from here and he's in charge of the best orchestra in the World, the Berlin Philharmonic. On a seperate note,I can't believe the Teardrop Explodes "Reward" or "Hollow Horse" by the Icicle Works never made it on my list either,no Lightning Seeds too,how did I forget to add them? Too many I suppose but legends like Frankie Vaughan and Billy Fury also might not be to everyones taste but they certainly made their mark and added another dimension to the Liverpool scene,I suppose we could go on forever.
