Muslim festival of Eid

MUSLIM festival prayers and culture celebrations are to take place in Sefton Park this year in a unique celebration of the faith.

Events will celebrate and commemorate the story in the Quran, in which Allah tested Abraham's faith, by asking him to sacrifice his son, Ishmael. Abraham was ready to perform the sacrifice, when Allah stopped him, and provided a ram in Ishmael's place: proof of Allah's mercy for his servants.

The festival will begin by performing Eid prayers (salat) at 9.00am until 10.30am with separate marquees for men and women, as tradition dictates. The Eid festival comes on the tenth day of Muslim pilgrimage in Mecca, so Eid is likely to fall on the 10th January 2006.

Prayers will be followed by a traditional bazaar (souq) with a host of Muslim arts and cultural goods, from 10.45am to 5 pm. The evening will herald the arrival of the Arabic Al-Hanaan Music Group and the Liverpool Somali Band to perform Arabic and Somali songs and music from 7pm to midnight. Admission is free and open to all.

Liverpool City Council leader, Councillor Warren Bradley, said: "This is a unique and welcome addition to Liverpool's cultural calendar, with the aim of preaching love, unity, peace and forgiveness."

Eid is split into two celebrations, Eid-ul-Fitre, meaning the festival of breaking the fast (after the fasting month of Ramadan which has already happened) and Eid-ul-Adha, meaning the festival of sacrifice, a reference to the prophet Ibraham's story which is taking place in January. The first Eid was recognised in 624 CE. For more information visit http://www.muslimfestivals.org or email: muslimfestivals@yahoo.co.uk

Organiser Dr Nabil Sultan said: "We are very much looking forward to such a large celebration of our Muslim tradition. We are expecting more than a thousand worshippers and are excited to welcome non-Muslims for our other cultural activities to experience Islamic art and culture."
