View Full Version : Tall Ships Race 2008
Jan 3 2008 by Catherine Jones, Liverpool Echo
Race start will be a highlight of Culture year. Catherine Jones reports:
Tall ships sailed into Liverpool for a weekend of maritime fun called All Aboard, organised by the Liverpool Culture Company as a taster event for 2008
SOME of the biggest and most beautiful tall ships in the world will grace the Mersey during 2008.
The river is expected to play host to more than 80 competitors in the Tall Ships Races this July.
The magnificent spectacle will attract hundreds of thousands of spectators in what is set to be a highlight of Capital of Culture year.
Liverpool was chosen from more than a dozen major European ports to host the start of the race, which also takes in Norway before ending in the Netherlands.
Chairman of The Tall Ships Races in 2008, Knut Western, said: “Liverpool here we come.
“We’ll be bringing the most exciting international fleet of sail training tall ships the city has ever seen to help celebrate Liverpool’s pres-tigious status as European Capital of Culture 2008.
“Sail Training International is both pleased and proud to be a big part of the year-long celebrations in Liverpool, a wonderful city and wonderful people, richly deserving the accolade of European Capital of Culture 2008.”
A dazzling array of vessels, from 30ft yachts to square-rigged ships more than 300ft long, will take part in the Tall Ships event.
Scores of the ships – square riggers, schooners, brigs, brigantines, ketches, yawls, cutters and sloops – will be berthed in Albert and Central Docks for four days before the race starts.
Liverpool played host to the Tall Ships in 1984 and again in 1992.
The closing date for this year’s entries is not until May and organiser Sail Training already has 50 vessels from 18 countries registered for the start in the Mersey, including 20 of the big glamorous Class A square rigged ships.
In 1984 it assembled a fleet of around 60 vessels, including five Class A ships, and in 1992 there were 70 vessels, including nine Class As.
Visitors will be encouraged to go on board the ships to see what life on the seas is like.
And there will be a spectacular Parade of Sail for everyone to enjoy as the fleet leaves on July 21.
A maritime weekend will be based around the Tall Ships’ time in port from July 18-21.
Among the attractions is the return of the popular Mersey Shanty Festival traditionally held during the city’s Mersey River Festival until it was shelved two years ago.
July is also a busy month on the river with the return on July 5 of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race fleet. The 10 yachts, including the Liverpool 08 Clipper, were waved off by thousands at the Albert Dock at the start of their 10-month, 35,000-mile voyage last September.
They are currently at Fremantle in Western Australia before the next stage of their epic journey north to Qingdao in China.
Liverpool08 skipper Ben Galloway said: “We don’t get much in the way of news while we are racing round the world but from what I hear things are really shaping up in Liverpool to what promises to be a fantastic year celebrating its status as European Capital of Culture.
“The welcomes we’ve received so far have been awesome, although nothing has come close to the send off we got from Liverpool nor I suspect the welcome we will receive on our return.
“Although we still have a long way to go and many more places to visit I know myself and the rest of the guys doing the final leg are very excited about returning to Liverpool in its year as Capital of Culture.
“With the city’s fantastic maritime heritage and the start of the tall ships race, a shanty festival and the many other events surrounding the city’s waterfront, 2008 is going to be a fan-tastic year with the return of the Clipper fleet.”
British Waterways said the new Pier Head canal and public realm landscaping surrounding it will be complete in August.
The link from the Leeds-Liverpool canal to the Albert Dock will include basins for boats to moor under the shadow of the Three Graces.
Honda power boats will also offer thrills and spills on the river during the month. And the QE2 will make its final visit to the city in October. Last year thousands turned out on a wet and blustery day to see the legendary Cunard liner.
Council leader Warren Bradley said: “Liverpool’s wealth was based on its role as a port and its fortunes rose and fell along with that of the Mersey.
“In 2008 many highlights throughout the year will celebrate the role of the river in the way it shaped the city’s character.”
Expert’s view . . .
“I DON’T see how you could possibly have a Capital of Culture year without the maritime element.
Just about everybody in Liverpool has some kind of connection with the sea – with some stretching back many years.
The maritime weekend in July is going to be fabulous because there will be so many tall ships here on this side of the river, and there will be all sorts of activities as well as the Shanty Festival.
We’re delighted it’s back because we like to think of Liverpool as the spiritual home of the sea shanty.
More and more people are now using the river and there’s obviously a huge future for leisure use.
I’d like to see the legacy of Capital of Culture year being increasing numbers taking the opportunity to enjoy the river and all it offers.”
BERNARD DAVIS, Co-organiser of the Mersey Shanty Festival

I have been to Liverpool and Seacombe a few times lately to take pictures of some of the big ships that have been visiting and am also planning to visit on monday 21st july to see the parade of sail, I have never been when such a big event has been taking place and am looking for some advice about the best place to go etc to take pictures.
I know that it will be very busy but wondered just how busy it is likely to be in say Seacombe and will I be able to get a decent view to be able to take pictures or will the place be jam packed.
I will probably get the train as I understand there will be no parking available on 21st so will probably go to B-Head and get the park and bus to Seacombe.
Any advice would be appreciated as I missed out on getting onto the Ark Royal as it was so busy and I don`t want to make the same mistake again.

Seacombe/Egremont has a very long promenade, and you should be able to get a very good view from almost anywhere along there. You shouldn't really have a problem finding a good waypoint along the railings.
Seacombe ferry terminal will be packed though in my experience because of the closeness to the parking facilities (people are lazy and want to walk as short a distance from their car as possible I find...), so go from there from the bus station terminal and keep walking up the promenade towards Egremont/Wallasey and you should be OK.

Thanks - I suppose it would take an awful lot of people to fill the Seacombe /Egremont prom so maybe I am being a bit over cautious.I did read somewhere that there was 100s of 1000s of people expected.
I was planning on driving to Seacombe but according to the Mersey Ferries website there is no parking at Seacombe or Woodside on 21st at all.
I also considered parking in New Brighton and then walking back towards Seacombe but will have a full (heavy) camera bag.

THIS year, visitors to this year’s Tall Ship Races event are being urged to use public transport and avoid peak time travelling wherever possible.
Access by public transport is good to the two key sites of the event, Albert Dock and Wellington Dock and a range of public transport options are in place to get people to and from the Mersey River front.
Councillor Mark Dowd Chair of Merseytravel, said:- “This is going to be a huge few days for the transport network and we’d advise people to leave plenty of time to get to where they want to go.
We’ve worked hard to make sure the transport network is as good as it can be to take the strain.”
Neil Scales, Chief Executive and Director General of Merseytravel, added:- “A lot of planning has gone into making the best of our assets over the next few days.
With the Open Golf, Tall Ships and many other events taking place it’s going to be a major challenge. But we’ve never shirked a challenge before, we’re used to big events and we’ll make sure we do what we can to make things work.
The sheer volume of people could mean queuing for some time after the event, whether that be at a bus stop, railway station, ferry terminal or in the car so we would strongly advise people to try to stagger their journeys home whenever they can and, if possible, travel outside of the peak times.”
By Rail
The easiest way to get to the Tall Ships event will be by train.
There are around 5,000 free park and rides spaces across the Merseyrail network.
Enhanced rail services will be in operation throughout the event, with trains every ten minutes at peak times.
Rail passengers should get off the train at James Street, Central or Moorfields on the city centre loop line for access to the Albert Dock.
Passengers should get off at Sandhills Station on Merseyrail’s Northern Line for Wellington Dock.
The Northern Line has great links with trains connecting at Lime Street Station, Liverpool Central, Liverpool South Parkway and Southport. The advice is to use Central Station or Moorfields to get onto Northern Line from the City Centre.
From Friday, 18 July to Saturday, 19 July, there will be six strengthened trains (six cars) every hour during the peak hours (6.30am to 10.30am and 4pm to 8pm) on the Southport line for visitors travelling to/from Liverpool city centre and Sandhills (for Wellington Dock) to view the tall ships in dock.
In between these hours the frequency will be three trains every hour, also made up of six cars. Trains on the Ormskirk and Kirkby lines will be all six-car services and run three times every hour.
On Sunday, 20 July, strengthened Southport line services will again run six times every hour during the peak hours (7am to 10.30am and 4.30pm to 8pm) and four times per hour during the rest of the day. Trains on the Ormskirk and Kirby lines will operate a normal Sunday service (two strengthened trains every hour).
Wirral line services will operate a Saturday service and, wherever possible, will operate as six car trains.
Parade of Sail - Merseyrail
Enhanced rail services will be in operation to the Wirral and Southport coasts for the best views of the Parade of Sail on Monday, 21 July 2008.
On Monday trains will operate to their normal frequencies across the Merseyrail network (mostly four trains per hour) with all Southport line trains made up of six cars.
There will be additional trains on the New Brighton line (eight trains every hour) between 3pm and 7pm for spectators who want to view the spectacle from the Wirral side of the Mersey.
By Bus
Existing bus services will be in operation, subject to some adjustments due to road closures.
Contact Traveline Merseyside for the latest information on bus services in Merseyside during this event – 0871 200 22 33.
A regular shuttle bus service will operate from St Nicholas Place opposite the Crowne Plaza Hotel to Wellington Dock on Regent Road.
The service, operated by Arriva North West and Merseytravel, will be fully accessible.
These buses will run from 10am until 10pm on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the race.
On the Monday, a shuttle bus will take passengers from Hamilton Square Station on the Wirral line to Seacombe, one of the recommended viewing areas.
Buses will not run to Wellington Dock on Monday, 21 July as the ships will move from their berths to the River Mersey for the Parade of Sail.
Mersey Ferries
Mersey Ferries will be providing extra services on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the Tall Ships.
Services will be extended into the evenings and two vessels will be operating on all three days.
On Friday, 18 July, normal direct services will operate between Seacombe and Pier Head from 7.20am to 9.50am.
From 10am until 3.30pm River Explorer cruises will operate every half hour from Pier Head, Seacombe and Woodside.
Direct services to all three terminals will then again continue from 4.15pm to 8.55pm.
On Saturday, 19 July and Sunday, 20 July direct services will operate between Seacombe, Pier Head and Woodside from 8.05am to 9.45am.
Then from 10am until 6pm on both days River Explorer cruises will operate every half hour from all three terminals.
Direct services to all three terminals will then again continue from 7pm to 8.40pm.
On Parade of Sail day, Monday, 21 July, Ferries will depart every ten minutes between Pier Head and Seacombe from 7.20am to 10am. Between 10am and 10.50am direct services will continue every 20 minutes.
Due to the closure of the river to all vessels not involved in the Parade of Sail, the will be no ferry services from 10.50am through to 5.55pm.
From 5.55pm direct services will begin operating between all three ferry terminals every ten minutes. Last services are 8.25pm (Seacombe to Woodside and Liverpool), 8.35pm (Woodside to Liverpool) and 8.45pm (Liverpool to Seacombe).
Visit www.merseyferries.co.uk for full details.
Coverage of the event will be as ever on www.southportreporter.com from Wednesday that week.
I can cycle up through Lawrence and Earle Road, followed by cycling through Parliment street and bam, I'm right on the dock road.

There will be little parking at all, and a red lane where there will be no stopping nor parking (at the risk of instant tow away) nearby. I live 5 mins walk away which is fortunate, and will set off just after lunch, as I believe te sail will start around 2pm.
I'll look out for someone looking for a good spec carrying a heavy camera bag!!

From 18 – 20 July Liverpool will host the start of the Tall Ships’ Races 2008.
Vessels can be viewed from 12noon - 10pm on Friday and at 10am-10pm on Saturday and Sunday at Wellington and Albert Docks.
The Parade of Sail takes place on Monday 21 July from 2pm. With over 60 sailing vessels filling Liverpool’s quaysides, docks and the Mersey with street entertainment galore this will be a visual extravaganza to remember.
To help you navigate yourself around this spectacular free event there is an Official Programme on sale for £4. This is available from all good newsagents in Merseyside, Cheshire and North Wales Tourist information outlets, (in other words across the region to which Liverpool belongs sans political interference) Mersey Ferries and vendors throughout the Tall Ships event. There is also commemorative merchandise available to purchase online.
To make your day as enjoyable as possible you can download the How to get to the Tall Ships' Races Guide, which includes information about parking, public transport, and the park and ride services available.
As well as the ships coming back to the Mersey, so are the shanty songs! Shanties 08 will feature dockside shows from the world's best shanty performers throughout the Saturday and Sunday.
And there's a showcase concert of festival headliners on Saturday evening at the Novas Contemporary Urban Centre, Greenland St, Liverpool. For tickets call 08444 77 1000 anytime or get them online.
This is sure to be a high water mark in Liverpool's European Capital of Culture celebrations. Don't miss the boat!

I was never any good with dates so I'll most probably not be seeing many of the the old square riggers, but I will be up in Liverpool tomorrow to meet up with lots of old sailors. The lads on the Sailors Home site are welcoming one of our number from the States who will be attending the afternoon session at the Eldonian Club tomorrow ,the 17th. I will be there and, if I get the chance,
I am going to see if there are any early arrivals of the Tall Ships.
Just watch out for the fat guy with the beard and glasses, accompanied by various old salts ,we will be there to make whoopee, you have been warned!!

Six of Her Majesty’s warships will be part of one of the most spectacular sights ever witnessed on the River Mersey on Monday, 21 July 2008 – the Tall Ship’s Race 2008.
The Royal Navy and Royal Fleet Auxiliary ships HMS Argyll, RFA Lyme Bay, minehunter HMS Grimsby, patrol vessel HMS Mersey and P2000’s HMS Ranger and HMS Blazer, will start arriving on the Mersey on Wednesday, 16 July.
And no doubt the highlight of the weekend will come on Monday, when Type 23 frigate HMS Argyll leads the Parade of Sail as the Tall Ships head for Lough Foyle in Ireland to begin the Liverpool to Malöy first leg of the race.
Also taking part in the weekend’s celebrations will be the visual splendour, rousing music and military precision of the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Scotland, who will be performing a number of engagements from Wednesday onwards in the city centre and over the weekend.
The two biggest ships, Argyll and Lyme Bay, will be open to members of the general public on Saturday, 19 July and Sunday, 20 July, from 10am to 5pm, giving visitors the chance to find out more about life on the ocean waves. Admission is free.
And on Monday, the head of the Royal Navy, the First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Jonathon Band GCB ADC, will embark on board RFA Lyme Bay alongside the Cruise Liner Berth in the heart of Liverpool to watch the Parade of Sail.
Commodore John Madgwick, the Naval Regional Commander in Northern England, said: “There is every chance that given a kind day by the weather we might see crowds of more than 2,000,000.
“Two million people at one event is almost impossible to imagine and it would be entirely inappropriate for the Royal Navy not to be there. HMS Argyll and RFA Lyme Bay are splendid ships and they will more than hold their own against the magnificent ships which are taking part in the Race.
“And the great thing is that they are open to visitors so people will be able to see close up how the modern Royal Navy works.
“Then, of course, HMS Argyll is leading the Parade of Sail, which will be visually stunning, on the Monday to cap a great weekend for Liverpool with all its great traditions of the sea.”

I'd say move down the river, go to brunswick marina the starting line for the parade of sail (staging area) is opposite tranmere oil terminal.
The best area would be outside queens dock/ customs house. Its about a 10 min walk from brunswick station. And you'd be walking past the staging area for the boats.
I have a map of the various boat areas/assembly areas on the river. If anyone wants it pm me. I'd post it up but it's 300k.

Here is a few from me...
I have applied Auto Levels to all photos, some of them came out purple.Sorry for that.
I have usualy fitted tall ships front of Echo Arena,Cathedral or Liver Building. I thought this would be much better having scrapyards as a background. So that I have based at Seacombe Ferry.

Well I would like to congratulate whoever was responsible for organising the transport yesterday.
I jumped on the train from Chester £4.20 return got off at St James St, took a wander around Albert Dock. Then after deciding it was a bit busy got back on the train to Hamilton Square where free buses were ferrying people to Seacombe. I am so glad that I decide to go back over to Seacombe as the view of the Ships was far better than I would have had from the Liverpool side.
There were portable toilets, ice cream vans, lifeguards, paramedics and plenty of stewards to help with any questions etc.
In fact considering how many people were there I think it went extremely smoothly.
Merseyside police were on the radio congratulating the estimated 750,000 people who attended both the tall ships and golf open for helping to make them such spectacular events.
