Maybe it was just a bad choice of words, but I dont like that quote at all "trying to transform the city's old image" - does that mean the image of a drab crime ridden wasteland still prevails despite everybody's best efforts, probably because the media delight in reinforcing it?

The report was reasonably good, but could have been better. There is so much more to the city than The Beatles!

It would have been nice to have better images of the Pier Head and the Old Hall Street Skyline. Maybe even St Georges Hall????

One of Liverpool's most famous sons has kicked off the European Capital of Culture celebrations.

Ringo Starr gets things started

Ringo Starr is performing at St George's Hall in The People's Opening tonight, along with Dave Stewart and 600 locals including guitarists, choirs and schoolchildren and 40 aerial performers.

The event will be followed by The Musical on Saturday night at the 10,600 capacity Echo Arena with a cast of 700 people, including 100 schoolchildren.

Starr, Echo and The Bunnymen, The Farm, Riuven, The Wombats, Pete Wylie, and Stewart will also be performing.

The Prime Minister sent a message to the city and said he hopes the celebration "inspires more people from all walks of life to try out new and different cultural activities".

More than 350 events are due to be held in the culture capital in 2008.

Regional events planned to coincide with Liverpool's 12-month reign include the RHS Flower show at Tatton Park, the Boodles Legends Tennis at Adlington Hall, Cheshire and Taste Lancashire 08, a celebration of local food and drink.

Sporting highlights include the 9th FINA World Swimming Championships, the UCI Track Cycling World Championships and the Hi-Tec World Squash Championships in Manchester.

Liverpool Culture Company, organiser of European Capital of Culture, estimates that an extra 1.7 million tourists will flock to Merseyside and spend £50m in 2008.

And the year-long title will bring in another £50m from visitors across the region, according to the Northwest Regional Development Agency.

Business and tourism leaders in the Northwest are working with the NWDA and the Liverpool Culture Company.

To be fair to this Salford Quays based radio station they are really bigging up Liverpool playing a 'We salute Liverpool' Weekend with a Liverpool music act every hour all weekend long and top story each news hour started with last night and today it's focussing on the arena 'Liverpool - the musical' tonight.

Sky’s Information TV, broadcasting on channel 167, is following up its Liverpool 08 launch screening (http://www.how-do.co.uk/north-west-media-news/other-media/liverpool-’08-launch-will-be-broadcast-for-24-hours-on-the-sky-platform-200712211590/) by airing a new short film about the city’s regeneration process.

Liverpool: building its reputation

Originally created by ICE for the ‘BBC Big Screen’ in Liverpool’s Clayton Square, the film handholds viewers through some of the landmark regeneration projects currently underway in the city.

It was broadcast for the first time over the weekend and will now be looped regularly for the next few weeks. Viewers of Freeview, Sky and other digital packages can tune in to 167 to see what all the fuss is about.

ICE produced the film after being commissioned by Liverpool Vision.

Speaking about the work, Stuart Jackson, the agency MD, said: “We were thrilled to be able to work with Liverpool Vision on this film production project and we are even more delighted that Sky Television have taken an interest in screening the film in order to help showcase Liverpool on an international platform.”

Record-Breaking Liverpool Plays The Hits

The cream of Liverpool's music scene will perform at a special concert tonight to celebrate a remarkable hit-parade record.

The Northwest city has produced 56 number one singles over the last half-century, more than any other in the world.

Many of the musicians and performers who helped build the city's reputation for hits will now make a song and dance of the fact as part of Liverpool's Capital of Culture celebrations.

Organisers of the charity gig, dubbed Number 1 Project Live, say it will bring deliver the biggest line-up of Liverpool acts ever seen together on one stage.

Performers include The Farm China Crisis, Dr And The Medics, Sonia and Atomic Kitten, with the latter releasing a cover of Cilla Black's Anyone Who Had A Heart on January 28 to mark the event.

The track is included on The Number Ones Album, which goes on sale the following week, commemorating the city's triumph on disc.

The profits raised from the 21-track record will go to six local charities.

However, the full complement of record-breaking hits will be performed by 25 Liverpool-based acts during the Project Live concert at the Echo Arena.

The event has even been given an earlier start time to accommodate a rush in artists to perform songs from the city's canon.

The night will fittingly finish with Gerry Marsden's Liverpool anthems; You'll Never Walk Alone and Ferry Across The Mersey.

That sounds a bit harsh to be accused of being a woolyback being from Woolton. In the 80s when they had footy spcial trains to the aways they's always stop at Allerton, Mossley Hill and Edge Hill before Lime St, but anyone who didnt stay on till Lime St would have people shouting 'woolies' at them as they got off earlier.
