View Full Version : Picture of the Day Jan 08

Kev
12-28-2007, 09:38 AM
Here are the rules:

Post a random picture of the Liverpool and Merseyside area every day for a whole year.

Only one picture should be posted a day and at the end of the year we would have 366 pictures of the area. (Leap Year)

Camera phone pics, digi camera, SLR they are all welcome as long as the quality is decent and the views are clear.

Pictures must be your own, taken with your camera.

Once you have posted a picture you must wait a whole day before posting another. For example, you post on a Tuesday, you can post your next picture on a Thursday, that gives everyone a chance.

Please include when posting the pictures location and other info if u wish plus today's date. Good luck!!!!

The building on the right:
I was at a wedding at St Nic's a couple of years ago and when we were having pictures taken in the grounds another guest told me the external cladding of that building on the right is white terracotta - imported from Spain. News to me - thought it was always red.

Great picture

Thanks folks. It was a late afternoon shot Shoney.

Tower Buildings was full of Shipping lines agencies in the early/mid 1980s and even had a carpet shop on the ground floor. Now they are apartments - surprise, surprise.

St. Nic's gardens is a little haven and if you look up at the back of Mersey Chambers (citywards) which is to the rear of Covent Garden, you'll see another Liver Bird perched on top.

Ged

Tinted glass and steel now seems to be 'in thing' with architects, there's only so much you can do with it so to be individualistic, they make all these weird and wonderful shapes like the 'Hilton?' ship shaped building on the strand, the sloping tops of Unity and Beetham and round buildings like on Hatton Gardens that seem totally out of context with the surrounding areas.

Cost is a factor too, you just won't get the great stone victoriana of the civic buildings as they were largely built by benefactors or as HQ's for organisations that wanted to show pride and wealth. They're certainly packing these new buildings in where they can, Old Hall street is like the time machine on the East side, knocked a load down and built a load up in no time.

Many of my family are having a reunion later this year in the Thistle. (next to my favourite seamans church - St. Nics) Because many are coming from Canada, US of A and Australia, I have had to book well in advance. After travelling so far, most of my relatives/friends will be staying for at least a month.
Some will be looking up other relations in Ireland.

All in all, I have been busy and can't wait to see them.

When I was a kid a lot of cats went missing and I'm sure I recognised some of them when they turned up as 'Davey Crocket Hats.' It seemed like every mother's son wanted a Davy Crocket hat.

On a lighter note, how many ears did davey Crocket have ?

Right I'll tell you he had 3.

He had a left ear, a right ear and a wild front ear.

There used to be a newsagents in the subway, but it had been boarded-up. Like-wise, the toilets at the bottom of the escalators.

I know what you mean John(Zappa)! On this particular beach we have a 'no rubbish' policy No bins are provided and people are asked to 'take their rubbish home'!! Works most times, but there are exceptions!! Cheers:PDT_Aliboronz_24:

Taken yesterday at the Canada dock. Nice to see a dock actually used for ships
I had to shoot through the fence so I couldn't get any decent photo's.

Omega...

Did you - by any chance - happen to notice the name of the ship. I think it may be the one I saw in Birkenhead a couple of weeks back.

The one I saw (RFA Fort Rosalie) was absolutely massive and I was so pleased to see a ship like this coming into Birkenhead docks.

Canada Dock is used on a daily basis. The scrap piles are there. What an awful looking sight and indicative of the elimination of the British steel industry when we have to send scrap metal to Taiwan to be melted down.

If it was a RFA (Royal Fleet Auxillary) perhaps the Navy are giving the dockyards some work again!!!:PDT11

Thanks folks, I was on my way to do those 'now' shots of those old Danensis pics from the 70s and I only just noticed that little view between the two dock buildings, it would look nothing without the masts there I think.

Williamson Square.
Spot the busker with his painted (cardboard?) guitar.
He's on the floor by Stoniers.

This is the best time of year to take photos of houses - while there's no leaves on the trees.
