Did anyone see that programme the other night comparing the 1957 F.A. Cup final between Villa and Man Utd with last years one between Utd and Chelsea.

The stats people were looking at the usual things, first free kick, how many corners and offsides etc.

Some of those tackles of old when you could come through the back of a player and charge the goalie in to the net actually made this lot look like pansies rolling around in mock grimmacing pain.

The Utd goalie caught the ball and a full 3 seconds later the forward crashed into him, both flew up in the air and landed awkwardly. It was ascertained the goalie was concussed so the spongeman and his little helpers proceeded to drag his jersey off over his head so the replacement could take over in goal - they didn't even have a spare goalies jersey.

Consider that a couple of years earlier, Man City goalie, the German, Bert Trautman had broken his neck in a collision and played on in some quite apparent pain.

They compared the walk up Wembley way, abide with me being sung and awaiting the kick off, Kenneth Wolstenholm remarked that they were awaiting a signal from the Royal box whereas these days of course, it's from the SKy t.v. man on the half way line.

Well worth a watch if you can catch a repeat.

Would love to see that. Football's becoming a non contact sport now its ridiculous, Crouch's lunge withstanding there seemed to be so many petty challenges last night that were pulled up as fouls.

The other night on LFCTV there was a thing about the 10 hardest players ever to play for Liverpool - some of the footage of Gerry Byrne and Tommy Smith was gruesome. There was one classic bit were Ian St John knocked someone clean out with a right hook for no particular reason except that the other player had caught him by accident. The player was laying spark out and st John was still protesting about getting sent off. If it happened today he'd be banned for half a season.

Ha ha, I can imagine it Ste, was Jimmy Case (Geoff Nulty will remember him) and Souness on there? I forgot to mention by the way that the 1957 Utd goalie had a broken arm and Jaw - but the main thing was, they got that jersey off him :)

After the war ended he joined St Helens Town where Man City signed him from.

Souness was on, can't remember about Case - I was only about 9 at the time of that Nulty tackle and remember having a bangaged knee and an uncle saying "who did that Jimmy Case?". There was classic footage of Tommy Smith having an alterction with somebody over a parking space in the Main Stand car park at Anfield saying "I work f***ing work here you dont"

Yes he was. He could never play for the German national team because he played in England. His actual name was 'Bernd' but the English couldn't pronounce it!!
