A Naked Wager
A most out of the ordinary occurrence took place in May 1850 when a man whose name was refrained from public knowledge for the sake of his own remaining decency, made a most extraordinary wager. On Wednesday, 22nd after many drinks at a pub on Brownlow Hill the man placed a bet that he would happily walk out from the bar, through Towbridge Street, down Clarence Street and back again, completely naked. His friends chuckled at the suggestion and the bet was accepted. In moments the man’s clothes lay in a pile on the pub floor whilst their owner toddled off out the door in a state of complete nudity. The alarm of women and children in the surrounding area was said to be in the extreme with many assuming he could only be an escaped lunatic. A policeman on his beat not from the spectacle heard the commotion and immediately apprehended the naked prankster as to prevent any more alarm. At the Bridewell the receiving officer was unwilling to take any man into custody in such an exposed state. He was released to gather his clothes and ordered to face magistrates by summons at a later date. The outcome of this indecent tale appears to have been overlooked by journalists of the day, keen not to give any further column inches to his extremely brazen behaviour.
