Caterina..
This has been going on for a considerable time. As people have become aware of the issue of food miles, these practices have been drawing attention and it will hopefully stop soon.
What about iceberg lettuce? At certain times of year we import them from California. For every calorie of lettuce we bring in, 124 calories of fuel is burnt in its transportation and refrigeration. Crazy.
Next time you're in the supermarket look for the country of origin on any food you are buying. If it's a long way away, choose something else. It's the only way to beat the profit-*****s our shops have become.

phredd 12-20-2007, 09:55 AM Good morning all.
I would like to add my 'polite rant' on this subject >>>
Many moons ago (1960's+) I lived in Nairobi, Kenya.
During that time I would take a Sunday drive out through the Great Rift Valley to Naiavasha to view Mt Longonot and the lake.
If you saw "Born Free" you will know what the scenery is like. Tranquillity, Peace and Beauty.(Naiavasha was the shoot location of the film)
However the views have now changed to one of glass by the acre.
Now the same area is nothing but "greenhouses" full of flowers and vegitables grown for us in the west.
Have you noticed that the flowers you get now from your local supermarket no longer smell the way they did years ago and that the colours are sprayed on them.
I believe all these greenhouses are owned or supported by the big food chains where we buy all, or most of our eats these days.
Naiavasha is not the only place destroyed by the west = Nakuru, Isiolo and Nanuki are in the same boat.
We live in sad days.

kevin 12-20-2007, 11:58 AM It's a very complex problem and difficult to resolve. Of course we can stop buying food from distant places but that can just start off another set of problems.
If we stop buying food from Kenya how will the local workforce earn a living? They make get a pittance as it is but that pittance may just stop families from starving.
New Zealand are very worried about the issue of food miles as a large part of their economy is dependent upon food exports. The food carried by ships isn't such an issue as that is quiet a fuel-efficient means of transport. It's the air freight which really guzzles the gallons.
If I knew the answers, I'd be a very rich man !
Of course, the rate at which we are burning fossil fuels may generate a solution (an unwelcome one) for us. With global warming it won't be too long before we don't need the Kenyan sunshine to ripen our crops!
Olive trees planted in Cornwall a few years ago are close to producing their first crop. They are also considering peaches and other fruits from warmer climes as being possible crops in the next few years.
Scary times.
Be thankful, be very thankful.
