Benefit Fraud
On March 19, 1886 Ellen Leary headed on down to the Bootle Relief Committee to claim financial aid. At the desk she stated how she struggling to survive as a widow with five mouths to feed in a destitute house at 154 Olivia Street. Police Sergeant Heydon was not so quick to believe her story, but after some stern and support from another woman, the fifty-five-year old was granted three tickets for relief from the committee clerks. The sergeant was right to be suspicious as the very next day Ellen returned with a new story begging for further freebies and she again succeeded in fooling the committee employees. She could not however bamboozle Constable Archer, who as she was leaving the premises, apprehended the aged trickster. Under his interrogation Ellen confessed to lying about her circumstances and said that she in fact lived in Liverpool’s Sylvester Street. A search of her pockets revealed the sum of 1s 7d. The following week magistrates found her guilty of false pretences and 10s and costs, or a week of imprisonment and hard labour in default.
