The Bull Run
An exceptionally bizarre incident took place right the heart of the city centre on September 14, 1846. It was on that Monday afternoon, just after twelve when a bull being driven down Lord Street took an inquisitive wander over to James Stout’s shoe shop. The premises was based at No. 53 and after a cursory survey of the shop frontage, the bull took it upon himself to slowly stroll on through the open doorway and walk right on through to the yard behind. There he happily pondered about a water-butt for a few moments before calmly retracing his steps back out onto the main thoroughfare to the supervision of his owner. This contented outcome was much to the relief of Mr. Stout and his customers who feared a far more destructive conclusion may well have resulted from their unexpected visit from this most curious of beasts.
