I was up before dawn that Atumn morning and slipped silently out of bed to accompany my son, who is still learning to drive, into his office. As I stood at our patio doors drinking my healthy gunk I looked down our garden and everything was black. The sky was black. I could just make out the dark silhouette of the mature beech trees against the coal black sky.
Then as if by magic a red line appeared on the distant horizon. Second by precious second the red grew and was joined by pinks, golds even blues. As the line spread rapidly invading the darkness more and more detail of what I was looking at came into my vision.
That dark silhouette at the bottom of the garden burst into a patchwork of reds and tawny golds threaded together by veiny blacks. Then the younger trees beneath the mature beech appeared and filled my eyes with awe.
Before we silently left I returned to our bedroom and smiled.
Thanks Lord for leading me out of the darkness and with your light showing me the wonders of the world that are there for us all to enjoy every day, even our darkest.
