Just read the news about Tommy Steele in Dr Doolittle at the Empire.
It brought back memories when I saw him he was a rock & roll singer
at the Empire in the late 1950`s. When we were courting my wife and I went
every saturday night to the Empire no matter who was on. It was usually
an American singer such as Slim Whitman or Marvin Rainwater. We would meet
outside the Higsons pub, I think it was called the Goats Head in Saint Johns
Lane. I would be carrying a bag containing my football kit as I`d be playing
football every saturday afternoon. We would have a couple of drinks in the pub
then go to the second house of the show. When it was over we would go the Eurasia chinese resturant on Lime Street and have a mixed grill which cost
6/6d each. I`m ashamed to say we walked out on Tommy after 3 songs of
his show. It must have been because I was a country fan.
