View Full Version : Petrol price protests planned for this Wednesday
A group called Transaction 2007 is planning a "nationwide legal protest" this Wednesday.
You might remember the fuel protest of 2000 which initially gathered strong support from motorists. However, that support quickly turned when many motorists were prevented from filling up because of lorry blockades.
PetrolPrices.com expressed to the organisers that they may find public support for another fuel protest providing it was properly planned to be legal and orderly. So far, the Transaction 2007 organisers have been unwilling to confirm to us specifically what action they have planned for this week. When we pressed the groups' spokesman, Chris Hunter, he said "This will be a numbers game levied against legislation. I can comment no further."
With fuel breaking well beyond the £1 barrier, PetrolPrices.com has had a huge rise in the number of emails from concerned motorists. People were especially angry following the last fuel duty hike, imposed by the Government in October. Despite being made aware of the huge resistance from motorists, the Government pushed ahead with the 2p duty increase, leaving the public frustrated and angry. Over 80,000 people had voted against the tax hike on our blog post.
The protests of 2000 achieved some success in that the fuel duty escalator was frozen. However, it has now resumed and with the rising price of oil motorists are paying ever increasing taxation due to VAT on fuel. Unlike fuel duty which is fixed, VAT is charged at 17.5%, so for every 1p increase in the price of fuel, we are actually paying an extra 1.175p.

An email i've just received.
''See what you think and pass it on if you agree with it
>
> We are hitting £106.9 a litre in some areas now, soon we will be faced with paying £1.10 a ltr. Philip Hollsworth offered this good idea:
>
> This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the 'don't buy petrol on a certain
>
> day campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil
>
> companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't
>
> continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of>an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT,whoever
> thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work.
>
> Please read it and join in!
>
> Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us
> to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP, we need to take
> a ggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the market place
> not sellers. With the price of petrol going up more each day, we
> consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the
> price of petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket by not
> purchasing their Petrol! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting

>
> For the rest of this year DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP.
>
>
> If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact we need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol buyers. It's
> really simple to do!!
>
> Now, don't wimp out on me at this point... keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!
>
> I am sending this note to a lot of people. If each of you send it to
> at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and those 300 send it to at
> least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on, by the time the
> message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached
> over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and
> pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have
> been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it... ..
>
> THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!
>
> Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all.(and
> not buy at ESSO/BP) How long would all that take? If each of us
> sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt,
> all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the
> next 8days!!! Acting together we can make a difference If this makes
> sense to you, please pass this message on.
>
> PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE 69p a LITRE
> RANGE
>
> It's easy to make this happen. Just forward this email, and buy your
> petrol at Shell, Asda,Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons Jet etc. i.e.
> boycott BP and Esso''
Cadfael 01-18-2008, 01:45 PM That's a poor amount of research done by the e-mail creator. Most people these days are aware that Supermarket fuel from the shopping people is actually from BP/Esso.
Petrol prices are a joke - I know that. It costs me about £70 to fill my tank on my Volvo T5 and then around town on a good day, I'll get about 19mpg but one point made by Top Gear not so long ago is that a bottle of water is now more than a pound too - where as petrol has to be refined, transported to the filling stations and you can get a litre of it for £1.
My car is my hobby so I see it as something to drive for pleasure so I'll go on paying the silly prices, but nothing has convinced me not to go and drive because petrol prices are high - I just get on with it.
Waterways 01-18-2008, 02:11 PM If world oil prices rise what can be done? Gordon Brown is powerless.
We should be aiming to move away from oil to alternative: the Seven and Mersey barrages for electricity, make sure new homes are superinsulated and air-tight tested (buildings regs sorts that one out). The electric car is now feasible as battery technology is here to give 200 mile plus range on one charge.
Appliance can be more efficient and stricter control on these is needed. The washing machine AAA ratings is now outdated as it is easily met. It needs re-assessing.
Better town planning excluding cars and making people walk or take public transsport. Elimination of out of town shopping malls, etc.
Energy consumption can be reduced and better cleaner vehicle propulsion units introduced.
This is all here now - it just needs a plan to implement.
disco 01-18-2008, 02:19 PM Don't know the exact figures, but petrol is not that dear its the TAX the Government puts on it that makes it expensive
shoney 01-18-2008, 07:33 PM down here petrol is $1.69 a litre , at ther present exchange rate that is equal to 67.6p per litre, why is uk petrol so dear when you have your own oil and process it, NZ is the most isolated country in the world to get bulk goods/supplies to, someone is taking the piss with the petrol prices there, i would suggest that it is the goverment banging the tax on it to the extreme

The North Sea can't supply enough oil. We pay more because we earn more than you.
