Cats
In 1846 an utterly ghastly report appalled local readers in highlighting a most deplorable practice committed within the vicinity of Peel Street. It was said that for a number of years certain callous young men in that area had come to amuse themselves through the habit of stealing neighbourhood cats. Once captured these unfortunate felines were hung up by their tails to the branches of trees only to await a most agonising death. Such final ends were administered through the use of mastiffs who would be set upon the screeching animals and maul the poor creatures to death. Police were keen to capture any participants known to engage in such inhuman spectacles of brutality.
