Shooting the Canon
On February 27, 1898 the organist of Toxteth’s St. Silas Church arrived for service. As he made his way down the aisle he passed an unfamiliar character dressed in a large overcoat acting somewhat peculiar. The whole place seemed quite bizarre to the stranger so the musician politely directed him into a pew. Before sitting, the stranger took off his coat and placed something heavy down on the bible ledge in front. This act caught the attention of the verger who with eagle vision spotted that the item was in fact a hand gun. The verger hurried to the organist and on realising the danger of the situation alerted Canon Woodward and his curate Mr Bartlett. The latter wasted no time in coming out to take control of the alarming situation.
“Excuse me sir, we are very pleased to see you here, but we cannot have such ugly things as revolvers in church,”
The curate bravely retrieved the weapon from the ledge.
“You’re all alike!” replied the deranged visitor who bawled that the clergy all had knives out against him and that he intended to get revenge by shooting the Canon.
“We would be glad if you could stay, but I’m afraid you cannot keep this gun.”
After a tense moment of silence the man got up in a hectic rage and stormed out the building. He however walked right into the hands of awaiting officers who had been searching for him all morning. It was later revealed that the mysterious gent suffered from relentless mental issues and that he lived with relatives in the neighbourhood. Somehow he had managed to escape their watchful control.
