This advert is taken from ‘The Scottish Umpire’ for October 23, 1888 and sourced from Warwick University. Scholars there state that the growth of professionalism in English football is represented by this advert. It was printed on behalf of a, “leading Lancashire Association Club” for “a First-Class Centre and Right Wing Player”. The team in question may well be Everton Athletic, (which later became Liverpool FC in 1892) or Everton FC which played under the name St Domingo’s from 1878 - 1879.
