Danny Williams is fight Matt Skelton next for the Empire and British titles.

Danny Williams and Matt Skelton will clash at the ExCeL London on Saturday 25 February to finally answer the question of who really is the best heavyweight in Britain with the winner going on to challenge for a world title.

With Audley Harrison now out of the British and World title scene following his dismal performance against Williams, when he was floored and humiliated by the Brixton puncher, unbeaten Skelton aims to reclaim his Commonwealth crown that Williams now holds.

The pair were due to meet in July this year but Williams withdrew at the twelfth hour citing flu which prompted Skelton, who instead fought Mark Krence and won with a seventh round stoppage, to call him a 'bottle job'.

Fresh off a stunning one round victory over John McDermott to retain his British title on the Williams-Harrison undercard, Bedford brawler Skelton simply said: "I’m over the moon with the news that the fight with Danny is on.

"I’m so looking forward to it I just can’t wait to get it on. A lot of things were and have been said by others about me and Danny in the past but as we all know actions speak volumes louder than words, now I just get focused and get the job I am here to do done.

"If you are looking for any war of words then get your quotes from Danny, I’m about fighting not talking and I will give what the public want to see from me on the night that’s a guarantee.”

Brixton puncher Williams is eager for a second world title shot after his first attempt ended in a brave eighth round stoppage loss to then WBC Champion Vitali Klitschko last December.

Williams said, "Unlike Audley Harrison who is a complete joke, I look at Skelton as a warrior and I know he will come to have a fight,"

"For the last five years Harrison was like an irritating boil on my bum and it's a great relief to me that last week I finally popped it,"

"I've proved to everyone that Harrison was a fraud and all-hype and now that episode is over with I want to move on and beat Skelton to claim back my number one spot in Britain before fighting for a world title again,"

"I still haven't forgiven Skelton for calling me a 'bottle job' after I withdrew from our fight in July because of flu, now he will pay for making those comments - painfully,"

"I'll be coming in the ring with all-guns-blazing against Skelton and he won't last,"

"I'll hit him like he's never been hit before."

Promoter Frank Warren said, "Danny and Matt have got everything to fight for,"

"Not only will this establish who is the best in Britain but this is also virtually an eliminator for the World title,"

"I have been speaking to Don King and the winner is in line for world title fight next so that is the golden carrot for both of them,"

"Both these guys are sure to have a war. Matt has never taken a step back in the ring and although his style is raw it is powerful and effective and gets the job done whilst Danny has the power in both hands to end it early,"

"It will be explosive whilst it lasts."

WOO HOOOO!

This will be better than Danny's fight with Harrison!:doubt:

In my opinion depends what Danny will weigh if he's about 10 pounds lighter he can do it. Plus SKelton will make it into a brawl and will make Danny fight which Audley didn't do!

Where are the young heavyweights though, Max? These two have about 70 years between them!

Not many young ones under 30 who are top atthe moment except for Wladamir Klitschko and Samuel Peter. Theres a Russian but he's only just started since winning gold from Athens.

Danny is 32 though so he has loads of time left and Heavys don't age as fast as the lighter weights. Skelton turned pro at 35 from being a kickboxer and in less than 3 years bagged the British and Empire title before he gave up the Empire title.

Will be less boring than Williams and Harrison though as Skelton will fight unlike Audley.

I kind of thought it was a draw 114 - 114 but was hard to score and Skelton should of been deducted quite a few points for all those dirty tatics so no robbery there as Danny was the cleaner fighter.

Suprised Skelton got no points deducted with all that dirty fighting though.

****, I was out of my seat when Danny bombed Skelton and his head just went and blood flew through the air! Shock

If Skelton wasn't leaning on him Danny could of stopped him!

Did ya see it Howie or Dave?

I watched this fight, I thought they looked like 2 ageing fatties trying to punch it out.
I prefer the lighter weight fights, where the men have muscles and not man boobs. :D

Williams back in hunt for world crown
Feb 26 2006

Danny Williams is back on the world title trail after successfully defending his Commonwealth heavyweight title with a desperately hard-fought points victory over British champion Matt Skelton at London's ExCel Arena.

He emerged from a brutally raw battle with former martial arts fighter Skelton to take a majority decision.

Williams, whose greatest night came when he knocked out the once-mighty Mike Tyson in four rounds in July 2004, had to dig deep to prevail against the big-hearted 39-year-old Skelton who suffered his first defeat in 19 fights.

Neither gave an inch in an intense clash, which totally atoned for the much-hyped but ultimately lacklustre clash in which Williams out-pointed Olympic gold medallist Audley Harrison at the same venue in December.

Skelton's British title was not on the line but the British Boxing Board of Control are almost certain to declare it vacant after he lost to a fellow-Briton over the championship distance of 12 rounds.

The drama continued after the final bell as the scores were announced with the three judges split. Ian John-Lewis favoured Skelton by 115-114 but Richie Davies went for Williams by the same score and Dave Parris scored 116-113 for Williams.

Now Williams is hoping to go on and challenge the 7ft 2in, 23-stone 'Beast from the East' Nikolay Valuev for the WBA world title.

Williams said: "That was a very hard fight. With the style he has brought from K-1 fighting it was a very difficult fight for me. He is awkward and he is tough but, give him credit, he is a real hard fighter."

He said he would be prepared to grant Skelton a return but would prefer to move on to bigger things.

"I would love to make the fight with Valuev. I would get myself into even better condition than I did for this. I have been British champion and Commonwealth champion. I have beaten everybody on the domestic scene and now it is time to move on."

Was Skeltons fault and thats what you get with Heavyweights, big bomb of punches!

**** that ref was genorous to Skelton, suprised no points were deducted! Was fair decision since Danny was cleaner and Skelton should of had points taken off.

That 12th round was COOOL!

The lighter weights are good but they don't deliver as much knockdowns or knockouts as the Heavyweights since they hit the hardest.

They are poor at the moment though!:disgust:

Watched it. Not a great boxing fan, but turned the TV on to watch MotD, and the TV was set to ITV so flicked between the 2.

I thought it was a good fight. Think that if the ref had pulled Skelton up on a few of the infringements, it might not have been the fight it was.

Round 12 certainly got me going. Wanted Williams to win throughout - no idea why though?!

Rematch is on in July!

Danny by KO this time.

Skelton's comeback fight was ok but still convinced that if Danny is 18st 8 like he said at the moment and gets lighter Skelton's getting Ko'ed.

Danny might be getting made mandatory challenger for the European Heavyweight title too which he should win this time.

Suprised he lost the attempt last time as Samil Sam is crap.
