Can anyone recommend any decent 'value for money' Geneology sites?

I'm attempting to research my family tree but every site I go on prompts me for a 'name search' then demands money before I can go any further.

I don't mind paying but I want to make sure they're good before I give them money.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I think one of my ancestors (around 1890) came from Ireland so if anyone knows any trustworthy irish sites too, well, that would be grand!!

Cheers,

Brian.

Hi, Brian.
I have used Ancestry for about a year now, paying monthly, they have a comprehensive list of searchable archives. This includes the Parish Registers for Liverpool up-to about 1900, this saves you time going into town.

Also there is another site called Rootschat.com, via this site I have found living members of my family.

Stan.

Hi Brian,

I have used FreeBMD which is a good site if you know who you are looking for also Ancestry.com is good if you don't mind paying as the census gives so much information. Also the latter day saints site gives the 1881 census free of charge.

Good luck with your search!

Cheers Stan, can you get scanned copies of official documents online? ie Marriage Certificates from, say, 1894?

I've just jumped the gun and signed up to one, not much, but it's useless. They break the searches down in to year quarters so if you dont know the particular quarter of the year then it's gamble time. Each fruitless search costs you a credit.

There is definitely money to be made in this for some unscrupulous sites don't you think?

Also I got much information from the sites Lancashire and Cheshire BMD where you can print off infomation and send for Birth, Marriage and Death certificates.

Hi Diane, thanks for the advice and the recommendations. I think I'll give Ancestry a dabble.

I only decided to do this a couple of weeks ago but already I'm becoming addicted to it.

You wouldn't have the link for the latter day saints would you?

If you are lucky enough to have Dublin City, Carlow, Cork or Kerry relatives http://www.irishgenealogy.ie is great for Church records

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/ is worth the £20 a year for their nice online family tree facility and the chance to match up with others who intersect with your tree. I've found a few 5th cousins on there.

There are loads of other good sites. I'm sure you will get plenty of advice.

I use http://www.thegenealogist.co.uk as well (£50 a year for the package I chose)

I would concentrate on free stuff and free trials though if I were you.

Cheers mate.

So far I've had 5 different spellings of the same surname. It's only got 6 letters in it!!

Hi Brian,
The Family search site also has a beta site if you cant find it on the site, google Discover your family history Family search, this part of the site has given me vital info on brick walls, failing that if you get stuck put it up on Yo there will always be someone to help out.

Like Brian I keep getting repeat info when searching but can't find the follow up info on the later 1911 census without playing Russian roulette and guessing even though its the same address and I know they still lived there. You can use a lot of credits guessing

Cheers Steve, is it just a case of noting down the Ref No then giving this to the records office?

£9 seems pretty expensive to just get a copy especially if you need several different types.

Thanks for the advice.

I know this may seem like a daft question but do the LRO have a search engine where you can look for births, marriages, deaths etc?

Can you book time on one of their PC's?
