A SERIES of striking light installations were last night switched on simultaneously in three Liverpool neighbourhoods.

The light-up, entitled Liverpool Jackpot, took place in Kirkdale, Kensington and Garston.

The installations, designed by internationally- renowned French artist Franck Scurti, and herald the start of the public art programme for the city’s year as European Capital of Culture.

Scurti produced a different design for each of the three neighbourhoods, in consultation with the community, as part of Liverpool Biennial’s Winter Lights programme.

The neons – which operate like a fruit machine – show images of food, a body part and a phrase taken from the local press.

Cllr Warren Bradley, leader of Liverpool city council, said: “We are committed to ensuring that the Capital of Culture celebrations are enjoyed by people across Liverpool.”

The lights will be on until February, with a further commission next autumn.

Have not seen the one's in Kensington or Garston yet! but i think the location of the Kirkdale one is not ideal. Have seen many motorists straining their necks to get a glimpse of it rather than keeping their eyes on the road and the nearby crossing.
The Cat on the Rotunda opposite is ok cos it is set back and can be clearly seen.

I assume thats the one thats been added to the disused Stanley pub on Stanley Road.

The cat in kirkdale was last years one, but is still there this year as well as the nwq one thats on the old Stanley pub. The cat was designed by a primary school child so think you're being a bit harsh there.
