Dog Days
In July 1855 Birkenhead declared war on stray dogs. It appeared that the number of homeless canines on the streets was becoming particularly excessive with no fewer than sixty mutts dealt with by officials within a single week. The owners of eighty more were issued warnings by the authorities for allowing their dogs to roam unsupervised. Richard Rimmer was one such owner. He was described as a ‘little hump-backed, ancient-looking man’ and when pressed by the Court over a dog of which he had been summoned the man denied all ownership.
“But your wife claims the dog.”
“No sir, the dog owns my wife, but my wife does not own the dog.”
The ingenious reply convulsed the court with laughter, but it did not prevent Mr Rimmer receiving a fine of 6 shillings. (Approximately £15 in today’s money)
