Christmas at the Sailors Home, 1874
“The inmates of this excellent institution spent a very pleasant Christmas, thanks to the thoughtful management of Mr Hammer. At midday they had a substantial Christmas dinner of beef, goose, and plum pudding, with rum punch; and in the evening tea with plum cake and fruit. Afterwards a very interesting entertainment was given in the hall by Mr H. J Nicholls, Mr W. Bennett and Mr Jackson, a ventriloquist, and other gentlemen took part. Subsequently a ball was given to the men and their friends, and they appeared greatly to enjoy it.”
