Hi there. I've recently started work on a local history project, working with a group of 14-16 year-olds based at Liverpool Lighthouse. We’re investigating 150 years of entertainment in the North Liverpool area, and I was wondering if any of you might know of good websites, books, or other sources of information. (I am from Liverpool, but not quite 150 years old!). We’re hosting an exhibition and putting on a performance at the Lighthouse based on our research, on Wednesday December 19th (time tbc). Any help or advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks, Ed Barrett Creative Coordinator Young Roots / 'Harmonize Looks Back' Project Liverpool Lighthouse |

The best of luck to you with your project. One item that should be included in your North Liverpool entertainment history project is that Litherland Town Hall was a place where a number of the Merseybeat era groups played, including the Beatles. In fact, I was told by Gerard Fleming who took my wife and I on a private Beatles tour in May, that Litherland Town Hall was where Beatlemania really started to take off with the fans (mostly girls) starting to mob the Beatles. See the following Google search: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...all%22+Beatles Best regards Chris

Sounds interesting. What is meant by North Liverpool? I'm stating the obvious, perhaps, but the Library is a good place to start. There are books about Liverpool cinemas and theatres. R J Broadbent's "Annals of the Liverpool Stage" (1908) is still the definitive history of Liverpool's theatres. More recently there has been a book called "Played in Liverpool", which details all the sporting venues. Last edited by PhilipG; 11-01-2007 at 02:14 PM. |

| Quote: The project is limited to a specific geographical area (Anfield / Everton / Kensington / Princes Park / Belle Vale / County / Warbreck / Aintree), and so Litherland might be just outside our remit. (Forgive me if my grasp of North Liverpool geograophy is a little shaky - I grew up here, but I've never quite known where Warbreck begins and ends). I spotted the Aintree Institiute date they played, though, which is a great lead for me to follow up. Thanks, Ed |

It's amazing how little I know about the city's sporting & entertainment heritage I know (beyond the obvious), despite growing up here. I'm (cheekily) trying to save time by picking people's brains on here! Thanks, Ed PS I've listed the geographical scope of the project in my reply to Chris above. Shame about the Aintree Institute. It's only recently been demolished. Luckily, I photographed it just before demolition. It was used as a cinema before the Aintree Palace was built. |

Cheers for the link, some great photos there. Would you mind us printing some to add to our exhibition? (It's not-for-profit). Where about would I find the Aintree Institute photo(s)? Loved the glass photos. Do you sell prints? Reckon you'd shift a few if you got some of those on the wall of one of the bars down Lark Lane. Ed Last edited by EddTheRed; 11-01-2007 at 02:40 PM. |

Hello Edd. I wouldn't call Princes Park or Belle Vale North Liverpool though. Chris. Gerard is quite correct. Bob Wooler billed the Beatles as direct from Hamburg at the Litherland Town Hall resulting in many people thinking they were in fact German and cause some people to say' They sing in English very well'. It's also sadly where Stu Sutcliffe is reputed to have been beaten up which may have resulted in his brain tumor a little later.

| True, I just got tired of listing all the areas we're covering every time I wrote an e-mail! I have since discovered the joys of cutting & pasting . . .
