View Full Version : A Sound that Makes You Feel Nostalgic

Hi all

I'll start this off.

There's a couple of sounds that I like.

It has been raining here in Baltimore, the first for a couple of months which we really need (yeh I know you have had more than enough in the UK!!!), and sounds travel when it is damp and rainy weather. I have just heard the bells of a church on Charles Street a couple of miles away from here. I am not a churchgoer but they remind me of Sundays and the tolling bells of the R.C. Church on St. Mary's Road when I lived on Aigburth Hall Avenue in Liverpool.

When I hear the far-off sound of a train whistle here in the United States, it reminds of when, after I re-emigrated to the USA in 1968 and came to live with my parents in Owings Mills northwest of Baltimore. I often would hear the whistle of a train as it traveled across the tressle bridge over nearby Reisterstown Road down, a sound that was particularly noticeable when it was rainy.

Fog horns.
You used to hear them all the time, now you hardly ever do.

Seagulls.
Reminds me of the annual holidays in Llandudno when I was a boy.

I think it would have to be something musical. I remember a survey a few years back that said the strongest of the senses for evoking memories was the sense of smell. I'd refute that though - for me it has to be sound - especially music. I only have to hear a certain song and it takes me back...

Laying in bed on a foggy night, when we lived in Garston, you could hear the plaintive sounds of the ships foghorns mixed with the rattle of the railway wagons being shunted in the sidings. The noises did not annoy, but reminded you of the world beyond your doorstep.
Music is also powerful at evoking memories,I can't hear Dionne Warwicks recording of "Walk on By" without recalling the passion of a long ago love affair. We mortals are but things of emotion, past and present.

I loved comics when I was young, still do,got encyclopaedias of them;but what was your favourite, and why?
When I was very young it was Comic Cuts with Tired Tim and Weary Willy on the front page.I discovered the Dandy And Beano, which I liked, but The Knockout was my favourite until the Eagle came along.
Any psychiatrist looking at my bookshelves would have a field day.
Lets hear about your choices,
BrianD

Yes Anita - MOTD was first broadcast on 22 August 1964. It showed only one match - highlights of the First Division game between Liverpool and Arsenal at Anfield; Liverpool won 3-2. :PDT_Aliboronz_24:

I agree Klaatu - those words - a cup of tea :handclap:
