I read the other day that Tony Meehan, founder member and drummer with the the Shadows (originally The Drifters), died in an accident at home.

I remember an interview with Tony when he was talking about some of the venues they had played. "We played in some places that were little more than underground toilets!" he said — that was a few weeks after playing the original Cavern. Anyone who had cause to visit the, er, 'toilets' in the Cavern would know exactly what he meant! Pity you couldn't dance in wellies.

Still, the place had 'atmosphere'.

I still remember the last band I saw play in The Cavern - Amon Duul II. Around the back end of 1972, I think. :smoke:

Read a brief history of The Cavern Club here (http://www.cavern-liverpool.co.uk/cavernclub/CChistory.htm).

April 26th 1984 was heralded as a new beginning with the opening of a new Cavern Club. Over 15,000 of the old Cavern bricks had been saved and treated. The old bricks were used to reconstruct the arches and the vaults to more or less the same dimensions as the original club. There are however a number of significant differences between the original Club and new floor plan.
I'll bet there are!

I was at that gig! I'm trying to find out the exact date - any help appreciated. It was my first year at Liverpool Uni and I went to two gigs there before it was knocked down, the other one being Focus (also need to find date for this)
