Yes George thanks. If you click on Rons photostream you will see the 2nd photo relating to this too. I also have other pics of the Gerard Street clearance which was quite a large area at the time. I also have similar for the clearance up Soho street for the building of the 4 Squares, for Byrom st for the building of Fontenoy Gardens and the bullring and the likes. What about it? people forget these streets were never wide because there were no cars when they were built and only the rich could afford hansome cabs,these are working mans houses.

My mother was born on Gerard Street...
and her brother Jackie was run over and killed down the bottom
of Gerard Street.. by a milk float, on his way to school..
I'll be doing a 'then and now' sequence of that shot...
I hope to take the elevated 'now' shot from around where that old photo was taken..
and it will be on my website... I'll say when...

Yes, and the bottom ones are whitewashed to let more light reflect into the narrow street. I have photos of neighbouring streets with a landing like that for the top row of houses George and it's sloping like I don't know what.

When I first looked I thought it was an entry ! .. closer inspection and I see it's actually a street ! :eek:
I am looking at the right thing ?? - centre of pic?
The fronts of the houses are practically on top of the ones facing - there must have been little privacy and not much light getting into those houses.

Reading Street in 1936, then in 1956 when residents went to rural Kirkby. These have been posted before but are for the benefit of our newer members.
Notice the timber supports for the landings in 1956,put in place after the collapse of a landing injuring a mother and child.
This was my birth place. That could be our removal van in the bottom picture. thats the block we lived in.
Bought the pics in Kensington market for 3d but suspect they are from the City Engineers books they used to sell

What a coincidence Ged, I was only talking to Franny Carlise the other day about the location the street at the side of the old session house, he also mentioned reading street and how it was pronounced incorrectly.

We had this trouble in school, teachers wanting us to pronounce it as Redding St but the people who have lived there for over a 100 years had always pronounced it Reeding St,as in reading books

On the subject of pronunciation;
Here's one I have never known how to say - Dunluce st, Walton. Is it Donelooss or Dunlusee ?? :neutral:
Someone told me that the e is not pronounced -- like you wouldn't say Gt Charlotte st as Gt Charlottie ! ;) (although I have heard of people saying Charlottie!) :) .. .. is that like saying Siddybotarm when your name is really Sidebottom ! :snf (41):

The other one that I always hesitate to pronounce is Ponsonby st.
Should we say it like posh people 'Ponson be' -- or the 'common way' :unibrow: .. PonsONbee ?? (I say it the 'common way!' ) :p

Ponsonby I think we could take the Dickens pronunciation for that as just Pon son bee.
