UEFA CUP DRAW
Group A
AZ Alkmaar
Zenit St Petersburg
EVERTON
Nuremburg
Larissa
What is it? The first two go through to the quarters, semis?
Gnomie 10-09-2007, 01:10 PM First 3 go through with the 3rd place teams from the champions league.
AZ Alkmaar are a good side
Paul D 10-09-2007, 01:57 PM Knowing Everton they wont finish top but if you can't qualify from that group then you don't deserve to be in it,it could've been much worse.
Paul D 10-09-2007, 02:05 PM Since you don't play each team home and away in this competition who do Everton have to play at Goodison?
According to BBC sport it's the 2 top 2 through to the last 16 ko stage. They haven't worked out yet which 2 games are at home, hope it's the 2 furthest places. I think the CL losers are past the stage of getting a freebie into the Uefa cup aren't they but not sure?
Gnomie 10-09-2007, 03:17 PM Group stage
The format was changed in 2004/05, however, when for the first time a group stage was introduced. Two qualifying rounds produce a first round of 80 teams who play over two legs to find the 40 clubs that make up the group stage. This phase comprises eight groups of five, with each side playing four games, two at home and two away. The winners, runners-up and third-placed teams from each section advance to the last 32 where they are joined by the eight third-placed clubs from the UEFA Champions League. Here, the traditional two-match knockout format resumes, until the final.
seems like the freebie is still on Ged

Didn't Paul McCartney once say he was glad to see the Bakayoko?

yep :PDT_Piratz_26:
Paul D 10-09-2007, 03:48 PM Alkmaar away will be difficult but it's great we don't have to travel to St Petersburg.
I got my wish of an easyish draw and the 2 furthest teams being drawn at Goodison so it's up to the team to botch it up now - stop it stop it Ged, have faith - undying faith.
Gnomie 10-09-2007, 04:19 PM SOP IT GED :finger:
think happy thoughts:PDT_Piratz_26:
One can't help it Dear Gnomie. I mean the only mistake Collina ever made in his life according to the studio pundits, his wife and kids and it was to disallow a perfectly good goal of ours. The other clown a few weeks ago disallowed a penalty only to give the retake which was a carbon copy. I always look at the ref and his assistants these days when we score rather than the players celebrating - just to make sure - then I ring home to tell them to put sky and radio on just to make sure again
Gnomie 10-09-2007, 04:35 PM we might get a Russian linesman :unibrow:
I think i'll be Russian the toilet if we're hanging onto a vital one nil win to see us through
Simon 10-10-2007, 07:40 PM I think it's a great draw, when you consider the teams we could have ended up with. Then again, when we got Metalist I thought 'great, never heard of them, this'll be a cakewalk'. But then, we're Everton. For what it's worth, I still think we'll finish in the top three of that group.
Three master class goals there. A short corner including a by line whip in that confused them.
Four one touch passes including a back heel and final shot in the build up to the 2nd ala school of science any day.
A youth in a mans body showing determination, strength and poise for the 3rd.
Even though Everton being Everton we contrived laurel and hardy style to try and throw it away when comfortably 2 nil up, they never really looked like having a decent shot.
Top of the group thanks to the earlier result, now we just need to start climbing the table and get into a position our form deserves.

Everton gave away a very soft goal that let them back in the game. They also had far too much room up front with too many players not being challenged. You can't do that at that level.
Can they appeal against Yobo's yellow card? He got the ball.
Well that God they played them at home and not away.
Who is the current No. 1 USA goalkeeper? Tim Howard is in the squad.
Not sure of the current usa mens goalie but Solo, the ladies usa goalie is a bit of alright :unibrow:
I only watch it of course hoping there's a shirt change at the end - never is though :disgust:
Gravesen wins the ball, gets fouled, we win the free kick and he gets booked cos he got up and probably told the player to stop trying to break his leg - great logic there too. Hope those yellows don't come back to haunt us later on.

Ref was Swedish and he is Danish.
I'm sure he spoke to the ref in Swedish.
Paul D 12-29-2007, 06:17 PM SK Brann in the next round followed by either Fiorentina or Rosenberg, that's a decent draw that.
Everton must not under-estimate SK Brann tonight, not with injuries to 4 first team players to contend with as even the 'mighty' reds only got a 1-1 draw there a decade ago.
Clean sheet specialists at the moment, another quick fire goal inside a minute like the one Johnson got in the last round would work wonders but with him on the bench probably and the Yak favoured up front, who may repay the team and fans after his belated return, we may have to be patient and pick them off when fitness will tell.
They are no slouches, having been crowned Norwegian champs but we saw off the newly crowned Russian champs along the way so come on you blues.
A.D.W 02-13-2008, 01:08 PM Good luck tonight Ged.

I was there! A nice little fishing town with a splendid little ground. A very friendly people as well.

Thanks.
It's only banter with Asbo on those other threads you know, (with a little hint of snide thrown in for good measure :)) When I praise Liverpool, the city to anyone, especially tourists here or foreigners or Brits when abroad, how can I miss out L.F.C.
I believe it's about £10 a pint out there these days isn't it - or so said the Radio Merseyside presenter who is out there tonight covering the game. Enough to keep one sober ;)
A.D.W 02-14-2008, 11:37 AM Good win for the Blue wallahs last night. Let's see you finish the job at Goodison in two(?) weeks time.
Hello there ADW. Yes, next thursday it is. Normally, I think he'd rest a few but since we've no f.a. cup game this weekend, there's plenty of time for them to rest their little 100k a week legsies in time though me may want them fresh for the next league game.
That Bergen place had 85 days continual rain a few years ago apparently and it rains for 2/3 of the year - and they say Manchester is bad
Didn't know whether to put this in the 'feel good factor' thread but...
I like the way this was put by Moyes regarding the Yak's 2 nd goal, I'd have said 'put them on their arses'.
''And a delighted Everton manager Moyes said: “He’s back in the good books. We know that’s what he can do. The way he sent the two of them for the pie and the Bovril for the second goal was terrific.''
2nd only to Thierry Henry in the prem goal scoring charts - this, his 2nd hat-trick for the blues in only his first season was a display of strength and power.
Scoring with both feet, it might not have been the complete hat trick like his prem one but it took the pressure off the team allowing them to express themselves more freely as seen in AJ's brilliant effort for our 6th.

shoney 02-22-2008, 11:40 AM this must be the first time there has been a local derby between teams from 2 different countries
Aye - see my posting on the lfc thread
A.D.W 02-22-2008, 02:40 PM Good win for Everton last night. I see you play Fiorentina in the next round. Good luck.
Thank you A.D.W. we'll need it as looking at the last 16 there are some big boys in there and fiorentina being 4th in a strong Italian league are probably better than the Ukraine and Norwegians champions we have knocked out.
Just been looking at your website, it's very good.
Ged.
Waterways 03-03-2008, 10:30 PM Who are favourites to win this competition?
Not sure but some big guns and ex CL teams in it. Fiorentina beat Juve away from home at the weekend 3-2 even without Mutu, their Argentinian scored.
