Liverpool - City of Radicals 2011
http://www.cityofradicals.co.uk/content/projects
http://www.nineteenhundredandelevenparty.org/
Responding to 2011’s Liverpool: City of Radicals theme, this exhibition draws on cultural and political narratives from the past century and asks what constitutes radical art practice today? The theme is prompted by events 100 years ago that had a profound cultural, architectural and political impact: a seminal exhibition by the Post-Impressionists at the Bluecoat, the opening of the Liver Building, controversial in its design and cast-concrete fabrication, and the transport strike that brought the city ‘near to revolution’. The title Democratic Promenade is taken from Walter Dixon Scott’s description of the Landing Stage in his 1907 book Liverpool.

Radical theme for The Bluecoat’s fourth Chapter and Verse literature festival
by Laura Davis, Liverpool Daily Post | Oct 4 2011 |
MORE than 40 writers will take part in The Bluecoat’s Chapter and Verse festival this year.
Running from October 12-16, the fourth annual literature festival will be themed around Liverpool’s City of Radicals year.
The 35 events include author readings, discussions, performance poetry and workshops with guests covering the whole spectrum of writing. Bluecoat artistic director Bryan Biggs says: “We look at writers who have challenged the status quo in their work, from Malcolm Lowry to Bob Marley, to a new generation of spoken word innovators and writers getting beneath the surface of the turbulent political and economic times we are experiencing.”
Guests include award-winning global journalist Ed Vulliamy, the grandson of department store pioneer TJ Hughes; BBC producer Colin Grant and Red Men author John Williams.

1985 school strike exhibit shows how young people can organise to fight back
The school student strikes of 1985 showed how young people are able to organise and fight back when their futures are under attack. Across the country hundreds of thousands of teenagers took to the streets in protest at the Tory government's plan to make the hated Youth Training Scheme (YTS) compulsory for 16-17 year olds or they would have their unemployment benefits stopped.
The Bluecoat Arts Centre in Liverpool is displaying twenty photographs taken at the time by former Militant newspaper photographer Dave Sinclair as part of its ongoing Democratic Promenade exhibition.
