EUROPE’S biggest TV screen could welcome visitors to Capital of Culture.

Land Securities, owner of Liverpool’s St John’s shopping centre, wants to erect a 90ft wide and 22ft high (28m by 7m) screen opposite Lime Street station.

The 3D installation would be made of panels to represent the waves of the Mersey and become Europe’s biggest media screen wall. Land Securities has asked Liverpool council for permission to build a 300ft by 33ft wall opposite the station on which the screen would be fixed.

State-of-the-art technology will generate an ultra-bright image of one billion colours that will be visible even in broad daylight using the latest advances in electronic engineering.

Either side of the massive screen will be two highly prominent spaces for media images or messages, which Land Securities has offered to Liverpool’s Culture Company to create a welcome message for visitors to the city.

Nick Davis, Land Securities development director, said: “The media wall will create a stunning impression for visitors to Liverpool over the coming years.

“Its installation and its visual impact on the St John’s elevation on to Lime Street is a further demonstration of Land Securities’ commitment to and continued investment in Liverpool.

“Land Securities has been active within the retail market throughout Merseyside for more than 40 years.”

Jim Gill, chief executive of regeneration agency Liverpool Vision, added: “The St John’s Centre is a major asset for the city centre and a very visible initial welcome to the city.

“Land Securities has produced a very bold solution to improving the Lime Street elevation during 2008.”

“We look forward to working with Land Securities as they develop their plans for further investment in the city.”

That's what they plan to do in 5 year time,this is just a temporary measure.In place of the car park they're planning to build a hotel.

The biggest media screen in Europe will be built in Liverpool for the city's Capital of Culture year.

The 120m structure will cover the existing car park at St Johns Shopping centre for the next five years.

The screen will be like similar screens in Times Square in New York, or Piccadilly Circus in London.

The plans have been approved by Liverpool City Council's planning committee - but are still subject to a full risk assessment.

Merseyside Police had expressed concerns that the moving images would distract motorists around Lime Street.

But Tom Venner from Land Securitas, the company in charge of the development, said they were confident that the risk assessment would address any problems or fears that the impact of the scheme might have on the surrounding roads.

The screen will not only advertise and broadcast local events but a specially designed section of it will also tell the history of the city.

"St John's Centre has been the gateway for anyone coming into Liverpool via the train station at Lime Street since 1969 and some may say it's not particularly pleasant on the eye.

"What we propose to do is to have a huge media screen wall which wraps along 120m of this and creates what we hope will be a stunning welcome to the city of Liverpool.

Why would the screen cause accidents here but not in Piccadilly Circus,Times Square and the whole of Las Vegas even? we think so small here sometimes.It will look brilliant and if we use it properly to advertise what the city has to offer then it will be a great asset too.

there certainly is a good proportion of scumbags all over the Merseyside area. Some areas having problems with them more than others. My own district of Anfield is plagued with them. Anfield has got a bad reputation lately because of them - and so has 'Noggzy' and 'Crocky' - people tend to immediately think of these problem areas - I do it myself. It's a knee jerk reaction without stopping to think logically.

I tend to come out with comments sometimes like, 'oh, the scum bags will soon trash it'
