The difference. 1st shot is Anfield cemetary, the down headstones
are not a result of vandalism, but the council pushing them over as
they were deemed, unsafe.
2nd pic is the chapel at Anfield crematorium, grade II listed built 1896
The church tower at the rear conceils the chimneys for the cremators
at the rear of the Chapel.

second one looks well maintained, I would have thought that the council had a duty to maintain the headstones? my mum was creamated in a private crematorium, thats beautifully maintained.

I believe it's the family's legal responsibility to mainatin the headstones. I think it best to have a flat one that won't fall over !!

I think you are right, but, as most are over 100 years old maybe there
are no family left. It would be far better if the council removed the
unsafe headstones rather than just pushing them over and leaving them.
It shows complete lack of respect apart from it looking terrible. There is
a section with new headstones surrounded by the toppled ones, I will put
up a pic so you can see how bad it looks.

Yeah they're laid flat so they wont fall on anyone. However,I used to work in Walton Cemetary and whilst there we had the job of burying a load of very old and some really big headstones.:034:
Very sad as some of them had amazing designs and one I recall was really tall.
We even dug up old coffin handles, bones and teeth.
I bet there was one or two important headstones buried.
And speaking of Walton Cemetary.........
The pirates grave at the front of the church .Does anyone actually know what the inscription is ? Too faded my my poor eyes.

Hey Steveb
Its in the cemetary Walton-on-the-hill.
The easiest way to find it is ...
The church doors which are right opposite the shops (Gayflowers flourist is on the corner). The bus stops are opposite too.
Ok now walk about 4 big stones from the door then about 3 to your right.
It's the only one with a skull and cross bones on.
Good luck and I look forward to the pics.:PDT11

The council have done the same thing in Ford cemetary, they put stickers on the unsafe ones advising the families who own them to make contact. Some of these were less than seven years old but were loose. It is the families who have to maintain them. I think they have to do this now as there was a little girl killed in Smithdown cemetary, she was playing there and a large, very old stone fell on her.

Hi AH!! yesI seem to remember the little girl. It is a real eyesore as
in Anfield, and no doubt others, there are 1000,s of toppled stones.

Was asked about the," Pirates", grave in St Marys churchyard Walton
Well sorry to disappoint but it isn't a pirate at all. Talking to the minister
the skull and cross bones means mortality. In the days when few could
read the symbol was used to indicate death, hence it's use on poison
bottles etc. Pirates adopted it simply to mean death to any ships.
Here is a photo, sorry for the quality but it was a lousy day, wind rain
the lot :-)

Yes I spoke to the minister Trevor lathom and he gave me the info
I have asked him what name is on the stone as parts that are readable
say Liverpool, so with a name maybe able to trace the person.
The churchyard is a wreck now and nearly all stones are used as
pavement

Shame the way the churchyard is now especially as its the oldest in Liverpool.
It would be great to find out who it is.
Am on the case too!!

The catacombs in Anfield cemetary fascinate me. A friend went down there a few times as a kid before they fenced them in. I hope one day they manage to restore them

Yes they were great to explore. There is a lot planned for Anfield
as it was part of the deal when LFC got Stanley Park for the new ground
that they obtained lottery money to do wonderous things to Anfield.
There is a new way of fixing unsafe headstones without pushing them over
what they do now is put 1/3rd in the ground so that the stone is standing
up. Check out this

I remember digging in St Mary's cem (walton) and came across 2 huge metal doors. These where buried deep and upright.I managed to heave the doors open enough to poke my nose in.I got a lit newspaper of my mate and looked in.Wow,five coffins that looked in good condition on these like benches in this concrete tomb.
Now that's always fascinated me.Why and who are they ? I bet there's a few more what has been buried deeper and deeper over the years.:034:
