Santa sprint attracts thousands

Thousands of people dressed as Father Christmas have run through Liverpool in a record-breaking charity bid.

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/39514000/jpg/_39514366_santa230.jpg
The existing record is held by a
Santa dash in Newport, Wales

Sunday's Santa Dash, now in its second year, raises funds for the Marina Dalglish Breast Cancer appeal.

Organisers received 4,514 entries and were forced to turn hundreds away after running out of Santa suits.

It will not be known for four to six weeks whether the current record for the largest such gathering, currently held by a run in Wales, was broken.

The rival event, in Powys, also took place on Sunday.

Football stars

Event spokeswoman Yvonne Rothwell told BBC News, organisers had been inundated with entries in the last few weeks.

She said the Santa Dash promised to be great fun for all involved, and confirmed they were very much in competition with the other event.

"The current record is held by Newtown with 3,455 - so we are way over that," she said.

"Hopefully we're going to take the record off of them."

Former Liverpool Football Club stars Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush were among those who dressed up for the run.

Father Christmas look-alikes set off on the 5km city circuit at 0930 GMT.

LAST year's Sunrise Fund Santa Dash in Liverpool was a world record.

The Guinness Book of Records has confirmed that Merseyside's festive race has set anew benchmark for the greatest number of Santa suit-wearing runners.

The 3,921 runners raised more than £70,000 for the ECHO's Sunrise Fund and have made the 2005 run most successful event yet.

Kop legend Kenny Dalglish took part in the 5km dash alongside fellow ex-Anfield star Ian Rush on December 4last year.

But race organisers are not resting on their laurels.

This year's event will take place on December 3and the aim is to get at least 6,000 Santas involved.

Sunrise Fund coordinator Penny Woods said: " We're delighted to have won the world record but we aren't leaving it there.

"We want this year's Santa Dash to be bigger and better so that we can secure our pole position.

"Everyone who takes part has lots of fun and it's agreat way to raise money for agood cause.

"This year we are also encouraging Santas to bring atoy for the ECHO Toy Appeal which can be donated on the day.

"All you have to do is pledge to raise a minimum £20 for the Sunrise Fund which supports Merseyside charities."

LIVERPOOL is set to go head to head with Las Vegas in a Santa Dash.
This year's charity event is shaping up to be bigger and better than ever.

Last December, 3,921 Santas donned their red suits and ran five kilometres, earning the stunt a place in the Guinness Book of Records.

The event, in aid of the ECHO's Sunrise Fund, will take place in December again and city Santas will be battling to keep their world record status.

The city's nearest Santa Dash rival was Newtown, Wales, but this year they have cancelled their event.

But there is still competition, for Las Vegas is organ-ising a similar event for mid-December.

So far the Santa Dash in Liverpool on December 3 has had 353 entries and 56 for the mini dash.

Regulars at the Newtown event have been entering the Liverpool dash and organisers have had entries from Wolverhampton, Shrewsbury and Dudley.

Sunrise Fund co-ordinator Penny Woods said: "It's never too early to start planning this year's Santa Dash.

"We want this year's event to be bigger and better than ever.

"Last year we raised more than £70,000 for the Sunrise Fund and this time around we want to collect evenmore cash.

"We can't rest on our laurels, though. I am sure that Las Vegas will be vying for our world record crown.

"We need as many people as possible to sign up to take part."

There is always a host of famous faces in the crowd and everyone enjoys taking part in the fun run.

THE gloves are off for this year’s Santa Dash.

Liverpool is going head to head with Las Vegas in a battle of the fun runs.

Today the ECHO is issuing a rallying cry to readers – help Liverpool keep its world record by signing up to take part.

Last December 3,921 Santas donned their red suits and ran five kilometres earning the stunt a place in the Guinness Book of Records.

In four months time the festive event, in aid of the ECHO's Sunrise Fund, will take place again.

But young pretender Las Vegas is getting in on the act with a Santa Dash of its own.

Sin City is organising a similar event for mid December.

So far the December 3 Santa Dash has had 353 entries and 56 for the mini dash.

We need to add to that figure to make sure Liverpool stays ahead of the pack.

We have come up with some things that put us ahead:

We all know that Santa is tubby but the average American man weighs 13 stone. We can use their obesity to our advantage.

It is too hot – it could be as warm as 58 degrees in Las Vegas during December – that’s no temperature to run around in.

Everyone is too busy gambling in the casinos to take part in a fun run.

Las Vegas is a Johnny-come -lately to Santa Dash. The ECHO-organised fun run has been going for years and attracts entrants from across the world.

You are not likely to bump into a sporting legend at the Las Vegas Santa Dash. At our fun run you could find yourself jogging alongside the likes of Kop legend Kenny Dalglish.

Sunrise Fund coordinator Penny Woods said: “We know Las Vegas will be giving us a run for our money. Now we need ECHO readers to help us keep our world record.

“Everyone who takes part has a great time and it is a fun way to raise money for local charities.

“It might be August, but it isn’t too early to pledge your support and start training and raising sponsorship money.”

For an application form for this year’s Santa Dash, contact Penny Woods on 0151-285 8452 or Alan Rothwell on 0151-427 7117.

don't have to raise 20 quid. So you have to raise 20 quid. What if you don't and only get to say 19.99p.:Colorz_Grey_PDT_16:

THEY came, they saw - and they dashed.

A sea of red covered the city yesterday as up to 5,000 Father Christmases took to the streets of Liverpool in a bid to retain the Santa Dash world record - and raise money for the ECHO's Sunrise Fund.

And today officials from US rivals Las Vegas, who will stage their own Santa Dash later this month, admitted they have a mountain to climb to beat us.

US race organiser Linda Smith, said: "Liverpool's Santa Dash was absolutely awesome."It's going to be hard to do anything better than what you did here."

Ignoring the blustery winds and light showers, runners young and old dressed from top to toe in their festive finery to complete the 5km race around the city centre and the docks.

Parents Colette and Karl Ashbrook from Childwall ran the race with seven-year-old son William.

Colette, 40, said: "This is our first time and we will definitely do it again.

"We did it just for fun but obviously we wanted to help the break the world record.

"It was a really good atmosphere." continues (http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/liverpoolecho/news/echonews/tm_headline=beat-that-if-you-can%2D-vegas%26method=full%26objectid=18205836%26page=2%2 6siteid=50061-name_page.html)....

The 2nd Annual Las Vegas Great Santa Run to benefit Las Vegas’ Favorite Charity, Opportunity Village (http://www.opportunityvillage.org/) took place on Saturday December 9th 2006, one week after Liverpool’s annual gathering of the santa faithful. Similar to Liverpool’s race, the 5K Fun Race and 1 Mile Walk draws world-wide attention with hopes of breaking the Guinness World Record for the Largest Santa Gathering. Some how, I think Liverpool will retain it this year! http://www.santa-dash.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

Would you like to see how they got on? Santa-Dash (http://www.santa-dash.com/) have been sent an exclusive video from Johnie Tidwell, resident of Las Vegas and a videographer:

At the time I filmed the people at registration they said it was very close to 5000…but this was maybe an hour before the race. I was trying to get the final number, but they said it would be on the organizers website – Opportunity Village (http://www.opportunityvillage.org/) . The weather was great, I think the biggest complaint was it’s a bit warm in the suits…Watch the video here (http://www.santa-dash.com/?p=33)

Just watched 500 Santas run around Salford Quays, on Granada TV , you would think only Manchester can do these kind of events.

Thats why I avoid watching our Manchester based (or should that read biased) regional TV station.

LIVERPOOL has kept its Santa Dash world record after beating off competition from Las Vegas. more (http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/liverpoolecho/news/echonews/tm_headline=it%2Ds-loss-vegas%2D%26method=full%26objectid=18299827%26sitei d=50061-name_page.html)

I think we have beaten our own world record too. This event is becoming very popular here and also around other parts of the UK and further afield. Lets hope Liverpool C C realise the importance of such a fun and inclusive event!

With Christmas around the corner, December is always a busy time for Santa.
But he and several thousand lookalikes have taken time out from present wrapping to take part in Liverpool's annual Santa Dash - with the aim of getting into the record books.
Would the real Father Christmas please stand up?
Over 5 thousand santa imposters hit the streets of Liverpool this morning and all in aid of charity.

^^ I wonder if Santa will bring him a new Stadium? ^^

From a recent Press Release:

Liverpool’s very own 'Santas Cause' this year is to fend off two serious attempts on the city’s prestigious and hard earned World Record for the 'Biggest Santa Gathering' by Las Vegas and Milan.

Add new events in Cardiff and possibly Glasgow into the equation and it is quite apparent that Liverpool will have its work cut out to retain the title this year.

This is the fourth Liverpool Santa Dash and in that time the event has picked up the official Guinness Book of World Records status in 2005 with 3,921 Santas taking part and more than 5,500 took to the streets in 2006! Liverpool expects to attract around 7,000 entries this year creating an unreal spectacle in the city centre on Sunday, 2nd December. All the runners take on the 5K course in the city dressed as Father Christmas with NO EXCEPTIONS! There is also a 1K Mini Dash for under 12s and they also count toward the World Record as well as they too have to take part dressed as Santa!

Entries for this year are already available: www.runliverpool.org.uk (http://www.runliverpool.org.uk)

I'm told by the organisers of Liverpool's event that Las Vegas have20,000 Santa Suits on order!

There will also be some changes to the course for 2007.

More info to come :)

The course has changed for this year and hopefully for the future. The race this year will begin at The Pier Head and will follow up through town, through the bus station next to the Royal Court, past St. George's Hall, over the lfyover and back arund taking in much of Liverpool City Center.

I for one am extremely happy as 4000 runners and more from all over the country will be having a great time running around Liverpool's historic streets.

Can I urge interested members to take part, its a proper laugh and a good day enjoyed by all.

The BEST Liverpool Santa Dash EVER!

Waking up to heavy rain this morning immediately got me worried. This was the first year it had rained. The alarm bells were ringing, had it all been a big waste of time and effort this year? Will it be called off? Will the rain stop? What about the health and safety of the running santas? Will everyone turn up or just a handful? etc…

I plodded on regardlessly, praying for better weather. We drove to the new King’s Dock car park and noticed that santas were arriving as in previous years. It was still raining though. After meeting a friend (his first dash) we carried on wet and damp to the Pier Head were I quickly realised that nothing was going to dampen the spirits of a world record beating crowd of over 6,000 santas ready to race. Would you believe, the rain had also stopped!

The route was a fantastic diversion away from the waterfront warehouses as in previous years and it perfectly showcased Liverpool’s historic streets and buildings. The awesome sight of St. George’s Hall as it came into view was breathtaking as we ran up the buss lanes past St. John’s Precinct. I should have ran with my camera!

The sprint to the finish was difficult, my mate (his first santa race remember) beat me across, cheeky. 25 minutes it took, I was happy with that. I picked up my medal, t-shirt and goody bag and then made my way back, met my wife and children and got ready for the Mini Dash! That too was a laugh and my kids enjoyed every minute of it.

Highlights:

The new route.
The medal.
The enthusiasm and spirit of the 6,000 santas.
The pride and passion of the race announcer.
Meeting friends. (how on earth does that happen in a crowd of 6,000 santas?!)
Plus lots more.

This has been by far the best Liverpool Santa Dash I have ever been involved with, without any doubt. Truly world class!

Pics coming VERY soon!

My home town of Derry in Northern Ireland are having a sponsored walk around the citys walls next Sunday and are hoping to have 10001 santas taking part hopefully breaking the world record.

Everyone taking part has to pay a minimum of £10 and all monies will be donated to the 4 main charities in the town.
