Being a little opinionated (you are, Michael?) I was heavily critical of the RLPO early in 2006. Being an avid supporter of this truly great orchestra I thought both it and the people of Liverpool, were being let down by lacklustre unimaginative management.
I thought it was too elitist and those attending were top heavy from a certain age group and social class:they were hardly representative of our city's population.
I longed to see younger people there; mums and dads, teenagers, children; all from a broad spectrum. This is what classical music should be about.
It's origins were never elitist; it is our culture, our music, our history - it is our soul music.
Concerts abroad seemed to attract a far wider and certainly a much younger audience clearly there to enjoy the music; the concert, the atmosphere.
What a change there has been to our truly wonderful RLPO and The RLPS (Society) in this last year or so. They really have turned it all around. If your opinion of one of the greatest orchestras and venues in the country has been coloured by the rear mirror view do yourself a favour.
Check out their website http://www.liverpoolphil.com/ , pick up (they'll send) the season's shirt-pocket sized brochure (there's a lot more than classical music to it) and get involved. The experience will add immensely to your lifestyle.
