Come on, show you truly love your city

HOW much do you love Liverpool? Culture officials are urging Liverpudlians to express their love for the city by keeping it spick and span in the run-up to 2008.

They hope appealing to civic pride will turn Liverpool into the country's green capital as well as the Capital of Culture.

Council leader Mike Storey said today: "We know everyone loves Liverpool, and we want them to do something positive to make it the greenest city in Britain."

A series of new initiatives will run throughout 2006 under the Love Liverpool campaign banner, covering fly tipping to dog fouling, littering and recycling.

And Santa is turning green this Christmas in the opening drive.

People are being urged to "watch their waste" during a festive season which sees enough wrapping paper to cover 500 football pitches being torn off presents across the city.

The recycling message will be emblazoned on 60 cabs, 28 buses and across giant billboards in the run up to December 25.

Organisers say while the levels of household waste double over the Christmas break, most of Liverpool's paper, cans, and the six million extra glass bottles and jars still end up in the bin instead of being recycled.

Currently Liverpool recycling rates stand at around 8%. This needs to be 15% by next April to meet government targets.

Cllr Richard Oglethorpe, in charge of the city's recycling, dressed as Santa and was joined by some young elves from Holy Cross primary school to launch the festive message.

He said: "People say they're too busy to recycle at Christmas.

"That's why we're making it easy for them to go green.

"Over Christmas, we'll be running extra kerbside collections, and people can also use one of the city's 234 recy-cling banks.

"We'll be reminding people to Love Liverpool with messages on billboards and taxis, and school visits where we'll educate youngsters about how important our environment is."

Love Liverpool, a joint initiative between the city council and Liverpool Culture Company, will be officially launched at the Christmas lights switch-on this Sunday.

I wouldn't mind seeing more places to recycle glass - I can recycyle paper and cans easy enough but our flats don't seem to qualify for kerbside collection. I've seen bottle banks in other parts fo the city - ut the closest we can see to us are in the Wirrel!

I would love the Garden Waste collection to extend to where I live but unfortunately the council seem to think that only Allerton and Mossely Hill residents have a garden!

the trick to not looking like an alcocholic is to spread it out over a few weeks

We've got a full box waiting for collection. Everytime we put it out its not collected  Still, next collection is meant to be on Friday, so fingers crossed.

Also received a bag for paper which will save the trip to Supermarket.

Unfortunately over the past couple of days I've seen 2 paper recycling bins on fire (you know, the big ones by shops). Not doubt by the local scallies.

I recycle as much as I can.
Bottles, cans paper, tin foil etc. I even take the labels off the cans and put them in the paper recycling bag. Every little bit helps .. used bus tickets, paper bags, supermarket receipts (as long as none of your details are on them), junk mail.
Any old clothes go into the clothing recycle, old blankets etc I donate to local cats home !
I take loads of stuff to charity shops too. Books, toys, etc.

In London here we get orange as well as black bin bags... the orange ones are used for recycling, paper, glass, plastic etc. Then they go out with the black binbags and get collected by a separate bin van. There really is no excuse not to recycle when it is this easy!

Doesn't Liverpool get a recycling service like this?

Hi Vicki, yes we do have a recycling service, though reading Kev's post it mustn't be city-wide yet! :p

We have plastic boxes for tins, bottles etc. Polythene bags for paper. And two lovely big bags for garden waste. Sorry Kev.
