View Full Version : Grassendale Park Area
A few more from Garssendale Park, L19
Used to play around these as kids, there were many more of them to the left behind the wall you can see, from WW2?

Kev Grassendale looks brilliant,I've never actually been around there but I'll have to make an effort soon, and by the way that's Steven Gerrards House.:Colorz_Grey_PDT_16:

Take a drive down but very slowly there are speed bumps everywhere. Anyway, you have more time to appreciate the individual houses and very impressive they are too.
There are actually 2 proms that are attached via a walk-through from one to the other.
The first part, where Cressington Station is can be entered opposite Garston Old Rd, there is a Church on the left as you pass through.
The second part, where that old man sadly crashed through the barrier a few days ago is found when you drive down a road called Grassendale Rd where the petrol garage is.

Grassendale is a lovely spot. The houses are so grand looking.
Paul D Those photos of Formby are beautiful. We used to go there a lot. Must go again very soon.
Great pics of Speke Hall, it's true that all Liverpool kids grow up with tales of the ghosts there :) I remember being in awe at the place when I was little and listening to the spooky stories.
My sister wouldnt sleep for a week after being told she was siiting in the spot where the baby was knifed and threw out of the window - cruel staff at Speke Hall :Colorz_Grey_PDT_16:, she was only 7.

Had a walk around Grassendale Esplanade this afternoon.
oohh, it's lovely down there. So peaceful, and the view over the river.
Don't know the area very well, but we drove down thru' Salisbury rd (I think it was) - saw Cressington station - we parked at the bottom by Knowsley rd & South rd. It is such a nice area. It must be nice to live there.
I wonder if it is quiet like that all the time ??
It was so peaceful this afternoon. We only saw one other person walking by.
It's like another planet from where I live !!!
Drove further along to St Michaels in the Hamlet which is another nice little area tucked away.
That Otterspool?
Was just in the Otterspool part.
Hadn't been their for years so took long to get out of it.

Crekky Park is very nice. The housing is just maginficent and the esplinade is really peaceful. I went there in the pouring rain so the view wasn't all that brilliant but those houses on the front must be worth an awful lot. The River Wirral and North Wales can all be seen from their front rooms. I mean, who wouldn't want to live there? Plus, it's accessible too! You can get into the City Centre in good time and now you can get to the airport more convieniantly and catch trains going to London, Birmingham, Manchester ect. All thanks to the new Liverpool South Parkway. It's just really ideally placed!
To be honest, I thought St Michaels Village was a little dissapointing. The buildings were nice but they did look a little tired.

Foxes on the beach? Wow - I'll have to look out for them. When we were kids, we used to take our buckets down there and wash cars for a couple of quid. We got chased most of the time.

hi all,
just wondered if anyone had any idea's, on what this is/was? It's on the river,at grassendale park,I thought, maybe a private slipway at one time?
I'm thinking it was a walkway onto the 'beach'' for Victorian residents? I've wondered about that too, ever since I was a kid.
I thought it might have been a slip road for people to launch their boats?

Maybe as Kev says beach access, wrecked ain't it ?
It is but still in original condition. the original entrance to this is located just as you cross through the entrance on the rights as you enter the 'park', probably well overgrown now.
Some nice drawings here of the area

Thanks Kat, here's the entrance to the park with the start of the 'slipway' visible on the right.

hi all,

I think it's one of the old points of access to the Mersey in these parts before Grassendale Park came into being. It was probably built up a bit in order to manage the Mersey mud! Where the modern houses are now situated (on the Otterspool side) there used to be fabulous mansion houses that had their own drives leading to Beechwood Road.
Nice area Granssendale.
Is It part of Garston?

Check this thread (http://www.yoliverpool.com/forum/showthread.php?p=59502&highlight=grassendale#post59502)
So It's a separate area.
I would of called It the greatest part of Garston otherwise.:PDT10

You should try the bridge on Rose Lane after gathering speed from Mossley Hill and aim to have your Mk2 Fiesta lifted off at the brow of the bridge only to see someone sitting a few feet in front of you waiting to turn right :PDT_Xtremez_42:

Yep, I remember that one too... but I was too chicken to try that in daylight.... only after midnight. The hill really did help get the speed up.
Cressington Park had much quieter and emptier roads - at least in the 60's...

Had a good mooch down there yesterday as I hadn't been down Beechwood Road since I ran up it at the 20 mile mark in the Liverpool marathon during the 1980s. I remember going back the following sunday to look at the mansions I 'd seen across the way.

Hi G.D.,
great pic's of a lovely area!Did you notice the plaque/sign on the gatekeepers cottage(pic' 3,Ithink?) It commemerates the good job he did,but I can't remember the dates involved, and I guess the "estate" as it was, doesn't exist any more,so it's just another private property!
Lovely pics GD, I've merged them with the existing thread.

Great stuff Joe.
Fabulous Joe [and your pics too :PDT10 ].
I've posted this somewhere b4 but when we were kids, we would often pile on down to the big houses with buckets of soapy water, offering to wash the posher people's cars. Sometimes we would get chased as we entered the gates, other times we would get a few nice people who would let us wash their motor, a pound per car.
We didn't make much  .
The speed bumps must have been Liverpool's first as they were down decades before the speed bumps we know and love today. They were great ramps on our BMX bikes!

I'll bet the speed bumps in Rock Ferry have been there longer. Think They're in Rock Park.

Hi all
Just a quick note in terms of cross-referencing and spreading the wealth as it were. I have put a note on JtR Forums (http://www.jtrforums.com/showthread.php?p=85680) pointing to this thread with the above excellent photographs by Joe and Kev.
I noted:
"Before James and Florence Maybrick moved in spring 1888 to Battlecrease House at 7 Riversdale Road opposite the Liverpool Cricket Ground, they lived at Beechville, 7 South Road, Grassendale Park, southeast of the cricket ground.
"Grassendale Park along with its twin community, Cressington Park, is one of the Victorian gems of Liverpool and I thought you might like a glimpse of it."

Hi, great shots brought back some memories for me.
I lived on North Rd mid eighties, first rented flat away from home. It was probably the shabbiest house on the road and it was a bit damp and leaky and I was in the top floor flat in the attic. I could just about see over the roofs of the other houses ships heading for the Garston Dock. I've some snaps I took of the house, but sadly didn't take any of the area at the time.
I just recalled a bit more, about me being out of work for periods of time - well wasn't most people then and me signing on at the DHSS office on the main road near by. I think it was called supplementary benefit - it paid for me bills as well as the rent and rates, and I remember getting money to get the place carpeted. I think its much harder being on the dole now for people.
But a great place to live. Doubt I could afford it now!
Cheers
