The lost tribe of Everton.

A recent book written by Echo reporter Ken Rogers with an accompanying website which allows you find anyone living within the Everton district in 1960 when the slum clearance programme was underway has created massive interest for not just those affected, but anyone who can emphathise with their plight as planning disasters still go on. Not that everyone wanted their damp, squalid, cold and mouldy surroundings saved but at least rehoused together locally as the vibrant community still intact, and certainly not in lonely sanitised boxes in the sky.

Saturday 16th July saw a mass gathering, which for something that happened so long ago that many have died and many were not even born, was quite remarkable. It was a pleasure to attend even though my patch was a couple of miles further south. It was also great meeting all the forumers that I did.

I notice Mart counted the steps up as 108. I wondered why he had his shoes and socks off at the top and was struggling after 20. This pic gives you some idea of how narrow it was so well done to Mart and George espacially ;)

The beautiful ornate ceiling and cast iron pillars forged by John Cragg at his Liverpool foundry. St. Georges church is now grade I listed because of them.

Great pics there Ged, you got me on the one from the balcony of Ken giving his talk, I'm to the right of the first pillar from the left with the black jacket, glad to see I'm paying attention!
I've no residential comnnection to the area but having worked there for six and a half years prior to this March have developed a great affinity for the place as I know there's some really good people there, loved the photo exhibition in the school and scandalous what they did to the community there, as Ken said population of 128,000 in 1960, now its down to four figures I think.
Unfortunately I had to get off at 1 so couldnt wait around to go up the tower, there must have been a great view from up there.

Getting my bearings from The Thistle, I could approximately work out were my old house was in Abbey Street and someone had thoughtfully provided a bench there where I sat for half an hour and pondered the good old days.

My Maternal Grandfather was Christened at St Georges (or The Iron Church, as it's known).

I used to live 3-4mins walk away from St Georges (Till I was @5Yrs old), when I first started researching My Family History I met the St Georges Vicar (Rev Black), He made me feel right at Home & He looked through their Registers for Pops Christening, when He found it he let me copy out all the info for free (unlike some Church Ministers).

I wasn't able to attend the reunion at St. Georges but my sister and her husband went and told me all about the day. We were moved from our little house in Upper Potter St. in 1961 and a lot of our friends and neighbours were moved to Kirkby ,Cantril Farm, and some went to Ellesmere Port.
Luckily my Mam insisted along with some others to stay in the area, which meant we went to high rise off Roscommon Street.
All my sisters and brother went to St.Georges Primary school, in fact I was there for the Churches centenary celebrations, when we all got dressed up and the Lord Mayor attended. I would have love to have seen those phpto's.

That's right.. My eldest sister is eighty, one more Seventy seven, my brother ,then me, then the youngest sister and we all had the same teacher at some point a Miss Cragg and my eldest sister said she was old when she was taught.

1960/1 I first attended there,every morning assembly in the school yard next to the gate at the side wall that led to the church and sing hymns in de church.
