Hi all when I first came to live in Liverpool in 1967, my fellow workmates and I used to drive to Formby Sat & Sunday afternoons after work, and there were two lanes that we drove down that lead us right onto the beach to park long before they built the pay carparks at Lifeboat Road and freshfield, now I was of the understanding that Lifeboat Road was one of the lanes we used to drive down to the beach but have been recently told that the road never accessed the beach, and the other was freshfield. I was also told that the caravan park down Lifeboat Road was originally closer to the sea but had to relocate because of sea coming in closer therefore there must have been access a lot further down than it is at presant. I would like to hear from anyone who can throw a little light on this please. cheers Colin

I don't know the names of the roads, although I used to go to Formby/Freshfields quite a lot, but haven't been in a long time.

Have you had a look at Google maps? - that might help.

I used to live in Formby many yrs ago ,
To access the beach we used to walk down " Freshfield Rd " through the level crossing at Freshfield station then onto Victoria Rd as far as you can go ..... brings you to the Squirrel reserve , where cars used to park up .
Hope that helps in some way .

If you can google Freshfield Rd / Victoria Rd Liverpool L37

Good luck
Karen

Thanks Karen, yes I am aware of the Victoria Road access and car park, but I am specificly looking for comments relating to my post re; vehicle access right onto the beach at formby where we used to go 40 years ago, in the back of my mind I always thought that it was Lifeboat Road we used as it was a single lane you had to wait if anything was coming the other way, When I started going back there 7years ago everythig was different there is a big carpark on the right which used to be all fields, and if you continue past the carpark through the gate at the bottom of Lifeboat Road the sand track goes up and down and at one of its low points were the sand is thin you can still see the tarmac Road and its yellow painted lines. plus the fact that the old life boathouse that used to be there must have had access to it, and the caravan park that is on the left, used to be a lot nearer the sea untill it was relocated due to sea coming further inland, that is what I have been led to believe, surely there must be some one out there who can verify this cheers all Colin

Hiya Colin ,
yes i can remember the ramp leading directly onto the beach but for the life of me can't think of the rd name.
i recall that black tarmac ramp though !! was it further up towards Ainsdale ?

I'll give my brother a ring tomorrow , he should be able to remember exactly where it was .

Actually, this is bit spaghetti for me!
Would you like to elaborate it a bit more plz.

I dont know what you dont understand, have you read my first post relating to "which roads took you right onto Formby beach with your car 40 years ago" I dont think it needs more elaboration :022::022::022::022:

This where you mean ? you can drive past the Formby point car park approx 1/2 way down lifeboat road until it becomes pedestrians only.

I think the other road you used might well have been Blundell Avenue, single lane ,used to go right onto the beach. St Joseph's Nursing home's down there nowadays and the back way into squirrel reserve.

I was trying to fathom that out myself

HC, I know you mentioned Victoria road in your earlier post but as Victoria road is really Freshfield I left that out ,but you were right in that years back you could drive direct onto the beach via that route.

It's like that old Scottish show "Braveheart"
was it SIR or just plain William Wallace where all his body was taken to 4 parts of the country? ( or is that a fairy tale GP

Further to my enquiries, just met a man at the caravan site who tells me that he was actually born in the old lifeboat house at the end of Lifeboat Road and he is adamant that there was never access to the beach (other thana 4x4 ) along this Road , but tells me it could have been Wicks Lane as the dunes have crept further inland in the past 40 years, Colin
