Giant for 800th Parade Takes Shape
Arts company Strange Cargo are creating a 15ft ‘giant’ to lead 800 performers in a spectacular, two-hour long, pageant to celebrate Liverpool's 800th anniversary on Tuesday, August 28 2007
Pictured here is the main frame of the giant, (there's room inside for one person) and Strange Cargo artists painting the outfit to cover the frame.
The people of Liverpool are taking part in special workshops to help create the giant, as well as several other new characters on pageant day, including two ‘big heads’ who will be the Giants constant companions.
Costume Making Open days: 9.30am-4.30pm - Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th August 2007
The public are invited to come and make a costume at the Lower Horseshoe Gallery at World Museum Liverpool that they can take away and then wear on pageant day to accompany The Liverpool Giant through the city's streets.
A Giant Celebration: 1pm, Bank Holiday Monday, August 27 2007
The opening element to the 800th Birthday pageant will involve the naming and presentation of The Liverpool Giant in St John's Gardens as part of the family activities for Mathew Street Festival.
Liverpool 800TH Birthday Pageant: 11.30am – 1.30pm, Tuesday, August 28 2007
Liverpool’s pageant will begin at St George’s Hall plateau going along Churchill way flyover, Dale Street, Church Street, Lord Street, Whitechapel, St john’s Lane, Lime Street and ending back at St George’s Hall. The Liverpool Giant will be accompanied by two Liverpool-themed Big Head companions and four large Liverpool-themed structures.
This unique piece of street theatre will be presented by the company artists and over 250 Liverpool participants who helped in its creation.

SAY “hey” to Jude. The Liverpool giant was formally named in a ceremony outside St George’s Hall yesterday.
Hundreds of adults and children have spent five weeks helping to create the 15ft figure which will lead Liverpool’s 800th birthday parade today.
Many of them gathered in St John’s Gardens to “wake” the slumbering lady giant, who is named after the famous Beatles’ song Hey Jude.
Culture Company chief executive Jason Harborow (is he still here?) said: “Strange Cargo, which has built the giant, learned a lot about Liverpool from the people who came to help – about what a great place it is, its musical history and things we’re proud about.
“Her dress is a huge painting about the city.”
Mike Storey, executive member heading the birthday celebrations, said: “The giant will lead the pageant, which will be very special indeed.”
Giant Liver birds and other models created by Strange Cargo will also take part in today’s parade, starting 11.30am at St George’s Hall.

Anybody know if the giant Jude will be on display any where?
I got a pic of her outside St Georges Hall.
It was some kind of giant anyway.

I've recieved this letter from Strange Cargo today & asked permission to post it here
Dear M Robinson
Jude the Liverpool Giant
you kindly added your name to the list of people who are interested in findingout more about what is involved in helping Jude the Liverpool Giant & her Liverbird companions, and we would like to invite you to a meeting about the Liverpool giant associatiom, which involves assisting Jude when she visits carnivals & festivals both close to home & further a field,as a representative of the City of Liverpool. We know she will be receiving invitationsto visitevents, and that she will need help to be able to fulfil these engagements, and we hope to be able to bring together a group of people ,so that the opperunity for the giant to get out & about as often as possible is easier to manage.Strange Cargo has a sum of money available to set up the association, which we will tell everyone about at the meeting.
you are invited to meeting in the community base 4th floor ,World Museum,William Brown Street Liverpool at 12 noonon Saturday 17th November & we very much hope that you are free to come along for an hour to enjoy some refreshments & find out how to become a Giant helper
please can you email me to confirm if you are able to make the meeting and if you cannot come, but still want to be part of the Association ,please let me know & I will make sure you are kept informed of any plans
please be free to extend this invitation to anyone you know that might be interested in helping Jude
